TuneIn to the Good New Radio Days

It wasn't too long ago that you'd have to pore over shortwave radio schedule listings, cross referencing time of day, with frequency in kilohertz, in order to listen to long range, overseas broadcasts -- picking out the words from the spooky radio harmonics. Then along came the Internet, which allowed for a continuous stream of mellifluous programming to be place-shifted anywhere.

Occupy Monsanto | GM Soy in Aquaculture: Possibly a Dangerous ...

Soy is very much present in the standard American diet today. It is an ingredient in most processed foods, and can also be found in meat products. Corporate giant Monsanto has then created genetically modified (GM) soy, which is engineered to protect plants from weeds. While the world is led to believe that not only soy but other genetically modified organisms (GMOs) contribute to good health, the truth is they can wreak havoc on your health and in the entire ecosystem.

The Dangers of GM Soy to Health and the Environment

Genetically engineered soybeans are especially designed to withstand the Monsanto-created Roundup herbicide, which is aimed to ?protect? the crops from weeds and pests. This means that they can resist heavy doses of the herbicide without being harmed. Although the Roundup herbicide was created to protect crops, it has backfired, causing devastating effects on human health as well as on the environment.

Studies show that GMOs cause reproductive and fertility problems in animals, that by the third generation, these animals have lost the ability to reproduce. Women who consume GM soy can also experience hormonal disruptions, such as abnormal levels of estrogen, an overabundance of estrogen activity, and damage to their pituitary gland. Additional research also links the consumption of GM soy to hormonal problems in men, who may experience loss of libido and erectile dysfunction.

The only published human feeding experiment on GM foods shows that when consumed, the added gene to GM soy transfers into the DNA of beneficial bacteria in your gut. Here, it continues to function. Even if you abstain from GM soy for years, the gene may still linger in your stomach, as potentially allergenic proteins are produced in your intestines.

GM soy, as well as other GMO products, has been linked to several health issues such as cancer, allergies, reproductive problems, and the formation of resistant bacteria. It is also important to note that in certain countries, farmers are subjected to pesticide poisoning and experience myriads of health and environmental consequences.

How GM Soy in Aquaculture Can Impact Marine Life

Even with the dangers attached to GM soy, Monsanto and Cargill, two of the biggest players in the soy industry, are planning to turn soy into feed for factory-farmed fish all over the world, saying that this practice will be ?sustainable.?

The factory-farmed fish industry or aquaculture is responsible for delivering half of the world?s supply of fish. Similar to concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), this type of fish farming is linked to several problems, including lack of space, pollution, and unnatural fish feed.

This shows to be alarming, judging from the fact that GMOs have irreversible effect on humans ? what more in the marine ecosystem? If farmed fish are fed soy, the possible dangers are:

  • The contamination of the marine ecosystem with GMOs ? According to Food & Water Watch, this practice will allow GM soy to enter the marine food chain, permanently contaminating oceans with problems. Even if these are only fed to farmed fish, unconsumed soy can flow directly out of the cage and into the oceans. 94 percent of the soy produced in the US is genetically modified.
  • Higher levels of pollution ? Oceans will become more polluted with the feeding of GM soy to marine creatures because these fish produce more waste compared to other fish. Once these wastes are released to the ocean, residues from the herbicide used on soy can leak out into the waters. A growing body of research states that glyphosate-based herbicide is toxic to aquatic wildlife.
  • Marine life will be threatened by corporate interests ? There is evidence showing the ill effects of GM soy on both humans and animals. Nonetheless, Monsanto is now planning on using their GMOs for aquaculture. They wish to achieve this and partner with Cargill, which has an industrial fish-farming division. If this plan goes into motion, issues concerning the future and sustainability of marine life will increase.

What You Can Do in this Trying GMO Times

If this is the case, what is the possible solution? Unless you know that the fish you are about to consume was obtained from pure and uncontaminated waters, you should lessen your consumption of factory-farmed fish.

Boycotting GMOs is another solution. Here are some ways in order to avoid factory-fish and GMO dangers:

  1. Support local farmers by buying from local grocers. You should consider buying more organic and fair-trade products.
  2. Choose only foods that are certified organic. This ensures that the product is GMO-free.
  3. Consider growing your own garden, or help out at a community garden. This gives you the assurance that your food is safe. Plus, you can educate your kids about food!
  4. Go only to restaurants that purchase locally-produced food.
  5. Educate yourself more about GMO issues and spread the word. You should be aware of and take part in broad coalitions? efforts for a GMO labeling law.

Smartphones power Samsung to record $4.5 bn net profit

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Friday posted a record net profit of 5.19 trillion won ($4.53 billion) in the second quarter, powered by strong smartphone sales despite the global downturn.

The company, the world's biggest technology firm in revenue terms, also reported a record operating profit in April-June of 6.72 trillion won.

The net profit represented a 48 percent gain from a year earlier while operating profit jumped 79 percent year-on-year.

Samsung cited robust demand for its mobile devices including high-margin smartphones, along with strong sales of ultra-thin displays.

Total revenue rose 21 percent to 47.59 trillion won, in a quarter that is usually quieter for technology companies.

Market researcher Strategy Analytics said Friday the Korean firm increased its share of the global smartphone market in the second quarter to 34.6 percent, compared to 17.8 percent for arch-rival Apple.

Samsung shipped 50.5 million smartphones, the largest number ever by any vendor in a single quarter, it said in a report.

"Samsung has been able to deliver hit models in most major price segments," Strategy Analytics noted, while Apple fans may be awaiting the launch of the next generation iPhone around September or October.

Samsung remained the world's biggest seller of all types of mobile handset in April-June with a 25.7 percent market share compared to Nokia's 23.1 percent.

The Korean firm said its differentiated products and competitive technology helped it overcome a difficult business environment, but struck a note of caution for the months ahead.

"As we move into the second half, continued fiscal instability in Europe and its effect on the global economy will result in the possibility of a slower than expected recovery and intensified market competition," said senior vice-president Robert Yi in a statement.

Analysts were more bullish, expecting an even better performance in coming quarters.

They said smartphone earnings -- which account for more than 50 percent of operating profit -- would remain a strong contributor to the bottom line.

"The mobile division, which alone will see an operating profit of 4.8 trillion won in the third quarter, was helped by sales of the Galaxy S III smartphone, and it will lead the firm's overall growth," said Y.B. Oh, an analyst at Hanmag Securities.

The company has sold more than 10 million Galaxy S III phones since its launch about two months ago.

Oh said the chip division would also register its biggest profit of around 1.6 trillion won in the third quarter, with prices expected to stabilise due to new product releases.

Kiwoom Securities analyst Kim Sung-In forecast likely overall operating profit of at least 7.7 trillion in the third quarter.

"I would sell Apple shares and buy Samsung. Samsung's operating profit margin also will exceed that of Apple in the next quarter," Kim said.

Saving on baggage costs is important when you shop for air tickets ...

The economy has taken its toll on the airline industry. The steady rise of fuel prices and the steady decrease of passengers with money for vacations has impacted the airlines In an effort to seem competitive on seat prices while recouping losses, the industry has gone for the bags. Baggage overage charges can make a cheap air ticket suddenly expensive.

What can you do to get around that? First decide if carry one is sufficient or if you really need to check bags. Carry on generally conforms to a maximum of linear inches plus a weight requirement. It depends on the airline. It varies from 45 to 52 linear inches (add length plus width plus depth). Acceptable weight can be anywhere from 26 to 40 lbs. This is the size requirements for the baggage stowed in the overhead compartments. Generally, the airlines allow one personal bag (small tote, purse, or briefcase) that can go on the floor under the seat in front of you. Some airlines charge for the carry on. Spirit airlines charges $40 for carryon baggage, but personal bag limited to 16 x 14 x 12 is free.

If you must check, consider the overall weight of your travel materials. It is common practice to pay a weight overage for luggage over a total of 50 lbs. domestically and 44 lbs. internationally. Remember to take into account that an empty luggage can weigh anywhere from 10 to 20 lbs or more. A second checked bag is often cheaper than paying the overage fees for weight limit infractions.

If you cannot pack lighter, is it better to ship? For some domestic flights, it is cheaper to ship your luggage (5-day transit to destination) than to pay the check baggage fee plus any overages. Because of the increased baggage fees there are new business that ship luggage. Surf the net and compare prices from the major shippers plus some of the newer ones to see how much you can save. There is more than just the seat price when comparing cheap air tickets. Compare all the costs, taxes, tariffs and luggage cost before you commit for your trip.

Workplace Fire Safety - Health And Safety In The Workplace

Workplace Fire Safety

Workplace Fire Safety measures must be a consideration for any company whether there is an obvious source of flame or not as a situation can quickly arise where circumstances come together to cause a fire risk condition.

A workplace fire is potentially the worst disaster the can happen to a business. As well as the terrible consequences of people being killed or seriously injured in a blaze, workplace fires often wreak damage so severe and costly to repair that many of the companies where they occur go permanently out of business.

In fact, it is estimated that up to 80% of businesses never fully recover from a serious fire, and even a small fire can still result in financial losses, disruption, loss of customers and damage to its reputation.

Government statistics show that those in charge of business premises ? whether they be in offices, factories, hospitals or schools ? have a long way to go in managing the risks from fire. In 2011 there were 27,500 recorded fires in workplaces which resulted in 12 deaths and 1,200 people injured.

Therefore, it is essential that employers take steps to adequately control all fire risks at their premises. Without proper fire safety measures in place, everyone at work and others who may be in the location, are at risk of being injured or killed as a result of a fire.

There are a wide range of work activities and materials that have the potential to cause a workplace fire. For example, discarded smokers? materials and sparks from welding or machinery can cause materials such as waste paper or solvents to ignite while faulty electrical equipment, damaged cables or overloaded electrical sockets can also be a source of ignition.

However, both the risk of fire occurring and the human and financial cost can be significantly reduced, or even eliminated, providing business owners take adequate precautions. This means identifying, assessing and reducing workplace fire risks, providing adequate fire safety measures and equipment and having a plan in place to deal with any emergencies.

Breaches of Fire Safety Law are now increasing as Fire Services routinely inspect premises after a fire, whether a small or large fire, and a business could be fined for not producing a risk assessment, blocked or non-operational fire exits and excessive storage of combustible items. So the need to ensure that workplace fire safety measures have been taken is a paramount need of any business owner of they want to avoid not only fines and a possible prison sentence, but also the loss of their whole business and possibly their whole livelihood.
