Franklin heads off to college with 6 gold medals
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Missy Franklin can't wait to head to college.
Boy, will she have some stories to tell the other freshmen.
And a lot of gold to show off.
With one last swim at the world championships, Franklin stamped her name in the record book and joined a club that is even more exclusive.
Before Sunday, the only swimmers to win six events at either a worlds or an Olympics were Michael Phelps, Mark Spitz, Ian Thorpe and Kristin Otto.
Now, there's Franklin, who earned her sixth by swimming the leadoff leg for the U.S. in the 400-meter medley relay, the final event of the championships in Barcelona.
Yet somehow, the eternally optimistic 18-year-old left everyone with the impression that she's capable of even more.
"I had some really great races that I'm really proud of, and there's still a bunch where I have a lot of room to improve," Franklin said. "So I'm really excited for the next year and the year after that and all the years following those."
She was heading home to Colorado for a much-deserved break, but not for too long.
In less than three weeks, she's got another life-changing event ? the start of her freshman year at Cal-Berkeley.
"We already have our room colors coordinated and ordered our fridge and microwave, so it just feels more real every second," Franklin said. "I can't wait for the experience."
She'll gain a new coach, working with Teri McKeever at Cal after a long relationship with Todd Schmitz, and is looking forward to trying some new things.
The immediate goal is improving in the 100 freestyle, the only event Franklin swam all the way through at this meet and didn't win.
She settled for fourth, just missing a medal but improving on her fifth-place showing at the London Olympics.
The result will surely provide plenty of motivation heading to the 2015 worlds in Russia and, of course, the 2016 Rio Olympics.
U.S. women's coach Dave Salo suggested Franklin may want to move up to try the 400 free.
While Franklin said she's not especially driven to match Phelps' record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, there will surely be at least some discussion about coming up with another event to add to the seven she swam at both worlds and the last Olympics.
"I'm perfectly happy with the amount of events that I have now," Franklin said. "But a lot can change, so we'll see what happens."
Franklin became the winningest female swimmer at a world meet, eclipsing the record shared by Tracy Caulkins, who won five times in 1978, and Libby Trickett, who matched that in 2007.
Six golds is rarified territory, indeed.
Phelps won six at the 2004 Athens Olympics, seven at the 2007 worlds and, of course, his mammoth haul in 2008, eclipsing Spitz's mark of seven at the 1972 Munich Games.
Otto won six golds at the 1988 Seoul Olympics ? an accomplishment since clouded by revelations of rampant doping in East Germany ? and Thorpe claimed a half-dozen victories at the 2001 worlds.
Now, there's Franklin.
She completed a grueling week in which she started out planning to swim in eight events.
She dropped out of the 50 backstroke, a non-Olympic event, after a lackluster showing in the preliminaries, wanting to focus on more important races.
She put up a personal best in the 100 freestyle, but she's still not quite good enough to contend for victory in that specialized event.
Otherwise, it was all gold.
Franklin outdid her performance last summer, where she was one of the biggest Olympic stars with four golds and a bronze.
"I just wanted to see where I was after London," she said. "It's kind of an unknown year. There are so many things that can happen."
Amazingly enough, Franklin was not even chosen as the top female swimmer of the meet. That award went to 16-year-old teammate Katie Ledecky, who won four golds and set two world records.
She claimed the trophy based on a formula that doesn't count the relays and gives bonus points for world marks.
No complaints from Franklin.
"It could not go to a better person," she said. "I am sooooooo proud of Katie. She was absolutely unbelievable. I think she has probably been my absolute favorite swimmer to watch ever."
Right back at you, Ledecky said.
"Missy deserves it probably more than I do," the 16-year-old said. "Missy had an incredible week. We are all so proud of her. What she did this week, we were sitting there in awe."
Without a doubt, the future of the U.S. team is in good hands, even if Phelps doesn't come back. The winningest Olympian ever retired after the London Games, but there's been speculation he's planning to get back in the pool before Rio.
Ledecky was 4 for 4 in Barcelona, nearly setting a world record in the 400 free and taking down the marks in the 800 and 1,500. She also joined Franklin on the winning 800 free relay team.
So much for those records that were supposed to stand for decades after rubberized suits were banned in 2009.
"The women have said, 'Poo-poo on that, we're going to break world records,'" Salo said. "Missy, Katie and Ruta (Meilutyte, a 16-year-old Lithuanian who broke two world records in Barcelona) are all really young women who don't know anything about high-tech Jakeds and plastic suits. They don't even know what that's all about. They think we're silly when we bring it up anymore.
"So it's a real exciting time for the women."
Especially for Franklin.
College is next.
Rio is just three years away.
"I think I'm going to add the mile ... see what happens. For sure," Franklin said, with a big laugh. "Oh my gosh, I would be drowning and (Katie) would already be finished."
Somehow, we doubt that.

NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) ? A cleaning crew has found an unexpected mess after arriving at Sea Dog Brew Pub on Nantucket: a 5-foot-long shark blocking the door.
Pub manager Jimmy Agnew says he doesn't know why anyone would have dumped the sea creature there.
Nantucket's public works department hauled the dead shark away after its discovery around 7 a.m. Thursday.
But Agnew said the pub fielded calls and questions all day long after word got out about the land shark.
He said a comedian whose band performs at the pub also posted a series of jokes about it on Facebook.
One suggested the shark went to Sea Dog "to meet his chums."

The need to address homelessness in the Seattle mayor's race

I live in the University district. Every morning, on my walk to the bus stop, I encounter a few different types of people. There?s the neighbor walking the dog and taking out the trash; there are the morning joggers, and there are the people sleeping under the awning of the University Christian Church and lining up for the food bank.
There are more than 8,800 people known to be homeless in King County, according to the 2012 One Night Count, a point-in-time census conducted by the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness. Nearly one-third of these people are minors, and at least 400 of them are young adults.
The next Seattle mayor has the responsibility of finding the most cost-effective and thorough way to help these people. The candidates had a few things to say about that task. Everyone made it clear how complex the issue is. But it isn?t enough to talk about why it is so hard to fix this problem. Comprehensive actions need to be taken.
State Sen. Ed Murray
For example, state Sen. Ed Murray emphasized the importance of getting people into housing that meets their needs, whether that is a short-term home to get them back on their feet, or a facility that could care for individuals living with mental illness. Murray mentioned the State Housing Trust Fund, saying it was a program he has helped push money into in an effort to help the homeless. The fund has put nearly $1 billion dollars into housing projects since 1987. If elected mayor, Murray said, he would try to create a partnership that would connect the fund with the private sector and nonprofits.
Current Mayor Mike McGinn also mentioned government-funded housing efforts, explaining in a written statement that he would like to renew the Seattle Housing Levy, which was passed in 2009, and focused on making apartment buildings available to low- to moderate-income renters, including people who were formerly homeless.

Another common theme among the candidates was a need for more coordination among nonprofits, private institutions and government to help the homeless. One can only hope this is something that will be a true priority, rather than one more collection of buzzwords that gets tucked away once a leader takes office. Lance Dickie made a similar argument in his November 8, 2012 column.
Homelessness doesn?t exist in a vacuum; every city resident is touched by it in some way, and it usually is not a pleasant experience.
In 2010, the Seattle City Council was faced with an ordinance that would have banned people from a variety of panhandling offenses, including repeatedly begging after getting turned down. This rule would have had a $50 violation fee. It nearly passed; the council passed it before it was vetoed by Mayor McGinn, according to this Seattle Times news story.
Many of us have found ourselves in situations with homeless people when we have felt unsafe or annoyed. That is understandable. However, it is unreasonable to think a rule that skirts the limits of the First Amendment is the answer to the problem of street civility that naturally occurs in areas of high-density homelessness.
Treat the cause, not the outcome. Homelessness won?t be stopped by only helping people once they hit rock bottom. The mayor has a responsibility to make the city a place where people can get and keep jobs, making a living wage. City leaders must keep a watchful eye on the minimum-wage debate going on in SeaTac right now, as described in this news article from July 25.
The future mayor must also look further, and demand a greater federal safety net for low-income families and individuals. Lance Dickie weighed in on what politicians can do to pragmatically fight homelessness in this column from 2011.
Former Seattle City Councilmember Peter Steinbrueck
This combination, of providing resources for people living on the streets and taking preventative measures with those who are on the brink of homelessness, is what Peter Steinbrueck characterized as ?closing the door at the front end, and opening the door on the back end.? It attacks the problem from both sides.
Civic leaders need to make this issue a real priority. Substantial support for nonprofits that are already making a difference is the bare minimum. The future mayor should look at the problem holistically, and try to help the homeless and those hovering just above the poverty line, by putting money into the housing levy and the trust fund. While a tent city cannot last forever, the evicted residents of Nickelsville must be handled carefully, not abandoned as soon as they leave Highland Park Way. The Seattle Times editorial board expressed similar concerns in its June 16 editorial.
There may be some people who will always be homeless, who choose the life of a vagabond or who will refuse all help. But those people are in the minority. I see men and women in their 20s, my age, begging for change every day. Nickelsville was built in large part by families, couples, and people with pets, who cling to each other to maintain a shred of normalcy in a situation that was not a part of the plan. In a country where some have reached Alpine heights of wealth, it is shameful for us to turn a blind eye to those who are in the depths of poverty. Steinbrueck thinks that Seattle is a compassionate city, ready to set an example in helping the homeless. I would like to believe he is right.

"We need more visible policing, foot patrols, neighborhood policing, and more proactive policing in downtown and in the parks.? There is a role for more eyes on the streets, perhaps a community alert system that you can sign up for on your cell phone.
"Some of the street issues and civility concerns are beyond what the SPD alone can control. We need a triage approach, with specialized responses for the homeless, mentally ill and drug addicts. The complete answer will require other interventions and social services."

"There are some public safety issues that we cannot arrest our way out of. That's why we partnered with King County, Department of Corrections, the ACLU and many other regional agencies to launch Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD). LEAD targets known and repeat low-level drug offenders Downtown and connects them with services like housing, job training, and services to fight their addictions. Similarly, I?ve expanded funding for the Seattle Youth Violence Initiative and other programs to aid in preventing crime among at-risk youth.
"I also launched the Center City Initiative in 2011 to tackle the difficult problem of how to deal with low-level street disorder. ...
"As a coalition of business interests, agencies, and other stakeholders, we also lobbied for more funding for preventive social service programs in Olympia."

"We are for decriminalizing drug use. We are for treatment for those with drug addictions. We also advise all who want to seriously fight to advance the? interests of the working class to not take illegal drugs.
"The working class needs jobs to unify our class and to build solidarity and confidence in ourselves and each other."

"We must have streets that are welcoming to women and children. ...
"I'll introduce a panhandling by permit program.? Panhandling exacerbates many problems and often fuels the very problems that put these folks on the streets.? The status of folks that need social services, a job, and a roof over their head are not elevated from their status by panhandling. Vendors of Real Change, who are at the very least taking a responsible step toward creating income for a better life, would be able to get a permit as available.? Quantities of permits would be limited.? The permit would not be for corners and the legal locations by permit would change daily so as not to overly burden any particular business owner or resident."

The response should depend on the level of disorder, but the consequences individuals face need to be very clear."

Some Northside Drive business owners gathered Wednesday night to protest imminent water main work at the Orchard Road/Hicks Avenue intersection. Most agreed that having the road torn up during the fall and winter months would hurt business. The project has been delayed until spring, Town Manager Stuart Hurd announced Friday.
ROSES to Mount Snow for expanding and bettering its mountain bike trails. A recently-completed advanced trail, the freestyle-oriented "Super Trail," contains tabletop jumps, hips, drops and steep berms that can challenge riders of all levels. Known mainly for its winter-sports offerings, Mount Snow has been a warm-weather draw to downhill mountain bike enthusiasts for more than 25 years.
ROSES to the organizers of the fifth annual Lee Goldsmith Memorial soccer Tournament, to be held August 10 in Willow Park. The tournament is in honor of Lee Goldsmith, a form Mount Anthony Union High School soccer player who died of cancer in 2009. Cost is $70 per co-ed or all-male teams. ROSES to new legislation, the "flexible pathways" bill, that affords high school students in Vermont added opportunities for a postsecondary education. A highlight of Act 77, which was passed in the recent legislative session and signed into law by Gov. Peter Shumlin last month, the bill allows high school students one free college course in each of their junior and senior years. Students earn college credit for this coursework, which can help them get a jumpstart on their future college careers.
ROSES to Teens for Change, a group that is giving back to local businesses that have supported the program through donations. The program gives kids of all backgrounds a place to spend time and participate in activities. On a recent summer day, members of the group were seen washing windows at the Gamers Grotto on Main Street.

Facebook Removes GOP Texas Attorney General?s New Campaign Ad
Again showing how easy it is to have conservatives blocked or removed from Facebook, the new video campaign ad for Dan Branch, the Republican candidate for Texas Attorney General, was removed from the social media giant for ?community standards? violations.
The ad, a fairly standard campaign ad, was removed and the candidate?s page blocked likely because Branch?s opponents flagged the Facebook posting.
The theme of the ad is ?Come And Take It!,? and is filled with images of flags, pledges, hand holding, people in prayer, and talk of limited government, traditional marriage, and pro-life issues. It?s all pretty standard fare, especially for a Texas Republican.
Through emails, the campaign said that it wasn?t ready to make a full statement and is waiting to hear from Facebook as to why the ad was removed and the account frozen.
However, campaign manager Enrique Marquez said the campaign believes the video was blocked because State Representative Branch vowed to fight for the ?right to define a marriage as between one man and one woman.?
?[We] suspect that?someone considered it hate speech and it was brought down?all signs point to that and Facebook isn?t giving us any answers,? Marquez said
Facebook has repeatedly had this problem with conservative pages and posts.
To mention just a few of the latest incidents, in February Facebook blocked the account of Tea Party Moms, in May Facebook blocked a posting from the conservative rock band Madison Rising, and early in July Facebook blocked Fox News Radio?s Todd Starnes after he posted a quip about being ?politically incorrect.?
All this was a result of a large number of liberals claiming that the conservative postings on Facebook were somehow offensive. This abuse of the reporting function is all too common and it is something Facebook has yet to address.
Still, Facebook has no problems with pages such as ?Kill Zimmerman? and pages that host vile attacks against such conservatives as Sarah Palin.
By Friday, Facebook had reinstated the ad and given bak control of the page to the Branch campaign.

Ellen Hosting Oscars: Hollywood Reacts on Twitter
Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter this morning to announce that she'd be hosting the 2014 Academy Awards.
So it's only fitting that Hollywood is also turning to social media to share their thoughts about the talk show host and comedian's second time emceeing the big event.
Most stars were complimentary, with actor Josh Gad writing "Yes!!!!" followed by a link to news of DeGeneres' hosting gig, and Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun tweeting a simple "congrats!!!" at her account.

But critic Richard Roeper was among those panning the choice, calling it "the bland leading the bland."
Meanwhile, the executive producer of DeGeneres' talk show, Andy Lassner, wondered, "What's this do for me?"

GLENDALE, Ariz. --Karim Benzema scored a pair of second-half goals to lead Spanish soccer power Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory over the Galaxy on Thursday night.The match was the first for both teams in the inaugural Guinness International Champions Cup tournament, which features six other teams from Europe.
Midfielder Angel Di Maria took a pass from former FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo, who'd gotten past three defenders, and scored the game's first goal. Di Maria later added an assist.
"In general it was a good performance from the team," Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "We played well. We had a good combination in the front. We had a lot of opportunities."
Real Madrid was too talented for the Galaxy, as Ronaldo had multiple chances to score early in the match. A cross from DiMaria found Ronaldo in the sixth minute, and his shot hit the top of the goal and caromed away.
Ronaldo also had quality chances in the 18th and 22nd minute, Galaxy defender Sean Franklin trying his best to defend Ronaldo from his right back position.
"Sean would probably tell you it was unbelievably challenging," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. "Ronaldo had all the attributes you'd want out of a player. Technically outstanding. He's obviously a great goal scorer. Great passing. Great on the dribble. Physically dominant. He has all the tools to continue to be one of the outstanding players in the world and we saw a little bit of that."

Madrid had the vast majority of the scoring chances in the first half. The Galaxy's best opportunity was a near own goal from Real Madrid's Daniel Carvajal in the eighth minute. Galaxy midfielder Hector Jimenez chipped a ball toward the goal that Carvajal almost misplayed with his clearance.The fans in the crowd of 38,922 rose to their feet every time Ronaldo touched the ball. The Di Maria-Ronaldo connection almost produced another result in the 38 th minute, as Ronaldo had plenty of time to settle a pass at his feet, dribble and shoot. But his shot went over the goal.
"The atmosphere was really fantastic and the stadium was one of the best in the world," Ancelotti said. "We will have a good memory of the experience in the future."
Ronaldo left the match at halftime, replaced at forward by Benzema. It took the Frenchman only six minutes to score.
Francisco Alarcon looped a pass to Benzema, who was in open space and shot the ball past Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe.
Real Madrid was close to a third goal after some nifty dribbling and fakes from Alarcon at the top of the penalty area, but his 60 th-minute shot was saved.
Jose Villareal pulled the Galaxy to 2-1 with some skillful work in the 63 rd minute. Seconds after Brazilian star Kaka left the match for a substitution, Villareal took two touches to get some room and scored past Real Madrid keeper Diego Lopez.
Alarcon was subbed out in the 73rd minute.
Di Maria found Benzema in the 74th minute with a cross over the Galaxy defenders for the final goal of the match.

Matt Damon Reveals Elysium Workout Routine
TriStar Pictures held a special screening of ?Elysium??July 30 at Gotham?s Sunshine Theater where Matt Damon reflected on the specifics to bring Neill Blomkamp?s dystopian vision of a broken Earth 140 years from now to the screen.
?I was shooting it when promoting ?Contagion? in Venice almost two years ago,? he said, adding that it was adding the vfx that has taken so much time.??For a movie of this scale it was only four days of reshoots which is almost nothing. It?s just that Neill is so particular about the effects, making them cutting edge and completely real.?
The director was equally insistent about how buff his leading actor should be. ?Neill was so specific about what he wanted me to look like. He actually had a picture with my face tacked onto this guy with this body,? Damon, 42, said, ?and they literally hired me a trainer and I went to him with the picture. It was four hours a day in the gym ? and I?m not 26 anymore but I got in shape.?
As for the pressure he might feel, what with last week?s Variety story?that Sony?s summer depends on how the $120 million ?Elysium? does, Damon laughed.
?Oh really? I?m glad I didn?t see that.? Hopefully we can come and perform.?
Blomkamp?s world is one where the haves lounge in luxury on Elysium, while the have nots below live in poverty and squalor. ?It works the way ?District 9? did,? Damon said of Blomkamp?s 2009 debut.? ?It?s not going to hit you over the head but later at the water cooler you can reflect on the themes of the movie.? It?s certainly not a message movie, it?s a big sci-fi action movie that should absolutely entertain you.?
As for reports that Eminem was Blomkamp?s original choice for his role, ?That?s true ? people have been asking that. Probably half of the movies I do have somebody else?s fingerprints on them. It?s the nature of the business. I?ve passed on things other actors have taken,? he reasoned. ?You never know exactly what the alchemy is going to be. Sometimes you end up with somebody and you can?t believe that wasn?t your first choice the whole time. I?ve always felt the right actor gets the part. Even on movies like ?Milk? for instance. I was desperate to do the Dan White role.? It was one of the best scripts I?d ever read. Then it got pushed back because of Sean [Penn?s] schedule and I was devastated, even though it was only two weeks of work. ?When I saw the movie and saw what Josh Brolin did with it, I went, ?You know what? The right actor got the part.? I do believe it all works out.?
That was true of Jason Bourne, Damon?s most iconic role.? ?The character was 45 in the book and when I did that I was 29. So that was really Doug Liman casting me and completely reinventing that genre and I was the beneficiary of it.?

U.S. House passes Iran sanctions bill to slash oil exports

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives easily passed a bill on Wednesday to tighten sanctions on Iran, showing a strong message to Tehran over its disputed nuclear program days before President-elect Hassan Rouhani is sworn in.
The vote also highlighted a growing divide between Congress and the Obama administration on Iran policy ahead of international talks on the nuclear program in coming months. Iran insists the nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes.
The bill, which passed 400 to 20, would cut Iran's oil exports by another 1 million barrels per day over a year to near zero, in an attempt to reduce the flow of funds to the nuclear program. It is the first sanctions bill to put a number on exactly how much Iran's oil exports would be cut.
The legislation provides for heavy penalties for buyers who do not find alternative supplies, limits Iran's access to funds in overseas accounts and penalizes countries trading with Iran in other industrial sectors.
Existing U.S. and EU measures have already reduced Iran's oil exports by more than half from pre-sanction levels of about 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd), costing Tehran billions of dollars in lost revenue a month.
Most of the OPEC member's exports head to Asia, where the United States has worked with Iran's top four customers China, India, Japan and South Korea to push them towards alternative suppliers. The four have cut purchases from Iran by more than a fifth in the first half of this year, over and above the reductions made last year.
Oil prices have remained relatively steady, which has allowed the efforts to continue, but some analysts say further sanctions risk pushing up prices and damaging the economies of U.S. allies.
"This is almost like an embargo on Iranian oil imports. It is like giving Iran an ultimatum," a Seoul-based refining source said, after the vote. "I think we can find alternatives but we prefer Iranian crude as the economics are better. If very little Iranian crude is available, overall oil prices would rise."
The bill still has to be passed in the Senate and signed by President Barack Obama before becoming law. The Senate Banking Committee is expected to introduce a similar measure in September, though it is uncertain whether the language to cut exports by 1 million barrels a day will survive.
Critics of the bill said it shows an aggressive signal to Iran that last month voted in Rouhani, a cleric many see as more moderate. He will be sworn in on Sunday.
NO HIGHER PRIORITY
Rep. Ed Royce, a California Republican and Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee who introduced the bill with Rep. Eliot Engel, a New York Democrat, said the United States has no higher national security priority than preventing a nuclear-armed Iran.
Royce said the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's drive to develop a nuclear arsenal was evident. "New president or not, I am convinced that Iran's Supreme Leader intends to continue on this path," he said.
The vote showed a growing disagreement between the White House and Congress on Iran policy. A senior administration official said on Wednesday the White House is not opposed to new sanctions in principle, but wants to give Rouhani a chance.
The Treasury Department last week partially eased sanctions on Iran by expanding a list of medical devices that can be exported there without special permission.
One of the 20 lawmakers to vote against the bill, Jim McDermott, a Washington-state Democrat, said shortly before the vote that the rush to sanction Iran before Rouhani takes office could hurt efforts to deflate the nuclear issue.
"It's a dangerous sign to send and it limits our ability to find a diplomatic solution to nuclear arms in Iran," McDermott said.
A supporter of harsher sanctions disagreed.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei "doesn't see our flexibility and good faith efforts as a sign of good intentions, he sees it as a sign of weakness," said Mark Dubowitz, the head of Foundation of Defense of Democracies, an advocate of sanctions.
"If anything, it's only going to be massively intensified sanctions that get him to blink."
But Trita Parsi, the president of the National Iranian American council, said the House action undermines the U.S. strategy which has long been one of good cop - bad cop.
The White House has taken a softer stance toward Iran's nuclear program and Congress has taken a tougher one. But now there are signs that the good cop cannot control the bad cop, he said.
"The impression on the Iranian side is not that it's good cop bad cop, but complete chaos and mayhem," Parsi said.
'TOO MUCH'
The bill also further denies Iran's government access to foreign currency reserves, and targets Iranian efforts to circumvent international sanctions against its shipping business.
"I think it's too much. Asian countries don't have much oil resources and they need to import a lot from the Middle East," said a trader with a North Asian buyer of Iranian crude. "If the United States keeps pushing further, it would be a big burden for Asian refineries."
While the bill has more steps to clear before becoming law, Asian buyers have already begun voicing their inability to reduce dependence on Iranian oil much further.
"Cuts in our imports from Iran have been the maximum as compared to other Asian countries," an Indian industry executive said. "At this moment there is no scope for further reduction."
India cut its Iranian oil imports by 43 percent over the first half of the year. That's more than the 27 percent cut by South Korea, 22.5 percent by Japan and about 2 percent by China.

Miami Hurricanes safety Deon Bush helps dad tackle toughest foe: cancer
While University of Miami starting safety Deon Bush lay at his Miami home in June recovering from outpatient hernia surgery, his dad, Gary Bush Sr., lay in another room dealing with liver cancer.
?I was Nurse Bush at the time,? said Michele Bush, a former UM and North Carolina Central basketball player who is the assistant principal at Coconut Palms K-8 Academy in Homestead. ?We?ve struggled, but God always makes a way for us.?
The Bushes, who met when she was a sophomore at UM in 1986 and he was a graduate of Mississippi Valley State (he played wide receiver with this weekend?s Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Jerry Rice), have raised two star football players and an accomplished basketball player. But right now they?re just three devoted children trying to stay positive for their ailing father, a 51-year-old Miami Southridge High science teacher known throughout Miami-Dade for his generosity in helping young athletes in need.
Eldest son GJ (short for Gary Junior) will soon begin his redshirt senior season as a starting receiver at Purdue; Deon started six of his 10 games as a freshman last season and was named by Miami coaches as Newcomer of the Year; and daughter Nya, 13, is a middle-school hoops standout.
They used to struggle to keep up with their ultra-fit dad. Now they?re cheering every step toward what they hope will be his full recovery. The journey continues with expected surgery next week to hopefully remove part of the cancerous liver and his damaged gallbladder.
?I want people to be aware you can be a healthy, strong person and still have things going on in your body that you don?t realize until you get a checkup,? said Gary Bush, now on leave from Southridge. ?Cancer is the last thing I ever imagined. I was getting up at 4:30 a.m. and doing five miles at the gym, lifting weights. I don?t drink, don?t smoke, and all of a sudden it happened to me.
?My health wasn?t the first thing on my mind ? kids, school, work. I was always running, running, running. A year ago I couldn?t even tell you where the liver was located.?

With the help of friends, Gary Bush and his family have created a website to inform others of his situation, make them aware of the importance of checkups and share his strong faith. Bush, an avid churchgoer and follower of pastor Alphonso Jackson at the Second Baptist Church in Richmond Heights, takes joy in online messages of hope from outsiders. And as much as it pains them to admit it, the family is struggling financially with exorbitant medical bills.
?He?s a very down-to-earth, great person, and I?m a changed young man because of my father,?? said GJ, who played football, basketball and ran track at Columbus High. ?I get up every day and push myself like it?s my last day. I don?t take anything for granted. I appreciate things more.?
Deon, who came to UM as a four-star recruit and has been urging Twitter followers to go to his dad?s website, turns 20 on Aug. 14. He played football, ran track and played one year of basketball at Columbus. He finished his first college season with 34 tackles, three pass breakups and tied for second in the ACC with three forced fumbles.
UM begins training camp Saturday, and players aren?t available for interviews until then. A person close with the program revealed that Deon had the offseason surgery to repair a slight tear in his groin, and sports hernia repairs also were made. He has been rehabbing and is expected to make a full recovery, though a time frame has not been revealed.
