Debt can hurt your pocketbook ? and your health | The Aquinian

Student debt is more than just an inconvenience for some. (Cara Smith/AQ)

Katherine McTiernan points at her upper back as she describes the physical pain she?s coping with.

She has recently developed chronic tension in her back, which, according to her doctor, is specifically the result of stress.

With graduation just ahead of her, this fourth-year sociology major is struggling with nearly $40,000 worth of debt. And she?s not the only one carrying a big load.

According to a study done by The Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission (MPHEC), the average student in Atlantic Canada will graduate with a little over $37,000.

For those students, debt is more than just an inconvenience.

McTiernan experiences periods of anxiety as well as chronic tension which according to her, is a direct result of stress.

?I know that stress is partly from school work, the curriculum, but also from the stress of knowing that my education is costing me almost a lifetime amount of what I would earn,? she said.

Rice Fuller, director of counselling services at UNB Counselling, said stress is related to poor health. Stress tends to have affect our immune system negatively too, making us more susceptible to different physical illnesses.

According to Fuller, stress can also cause a number of chronic health conditions both physical and mental. Some of the mental illnesses include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and psychotic disorders.

Because stress has a negative impact on our concentration, Fuller encourages students to try to counter and relieve that stress.

?I cannot stress enough that the human body functions best [both mentally and physically] when a person eats a healthy diet, gets regular (and enough) sleep, exercises regularly, and takes some time out of the day (no matter how busy) to relax,? said Fuller.

?One of the worst thoughts you can have when you are stressed-out is, ?I don?t have enough time to exercise today? or ?If I just stay up all night to study for the test I will get a better grade.?

Craig Mazerolle, vice-president education for the St. Thomas University students? union, said student debt should be taken more seriously.

?Students in New Brunswick are paying the second highest tuition fees in the country and this is leading to a situation where students have very high levels of debt and it?s really affecting not only their own personal well-being but also the well-being of the province as a whole,? said Mazerolle.

Many students also work while going to school. But studies show the more hours a student works, the lower their grades are.

McTiernan said she had to choose between lower debt or a 4.0 GPA.

?You work yourself to death and it?s either you work yourself to pay for school and get terrible grades or you work yourself to death to get that mark and then how do you pay for school?? she said. ?There is no both.?

This struggle to maintain good grades adds to the pile of stress and ultimately has an impact on a student?s health.

McTiernan stands by the belief that student-debt can be directly related to stress. She believes that if tuition were lower, she would be a much healthier student.

?If my education were free, I would work just as hard and I would have so much less stress.?

Twin wins give Romney momentum for Super Tuesday

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) ? A relieved-sounding Mitt Romney hopes to parlay twin victories in Arizona and Michigan into Super Tuesday momentum as the GOP presidential race sweeps across 10 states at once next week. After falling short of a Michigan upset, rival Rick Santorum faces stiffer competition for the conservative vote as he moves into Newt Gingrich territory.

Gingrich, the former U.S. House speaker from Georgia, is counting on Tuesday's Southern primaries to revive his campaign. Texas Rep. Ron Paul is also a factor, attempting to mine delegates next week in caucus states like North Dakota.

Washington state's caucuses are first, on Saturday. Three days later comes Super Tuesday, with 419 delegates at stake, including big primaries in Ohio and Georgia.

Romney's slim victory in his native Michigan ? 41 percent to Santorum's 38 percent ? raised questions about whether he needs to shift strategy. He acknowledged making personal mistakes and said he was trying to "do better and work harder."

"We didn't win by a lot, but we won by enough," the former Massachusetts governor told cheering supporters in Michigan, where his father was governor in the 1960s.

Santorum vowed to stay the conservative course he has set. "A month ago they didn't know who we are, but they do now," he told his supporters.

All four candidates face financial strains as they try to advertise in a series of states expensive for campaigns. It would cost about $5 million to run a week's worth of heavy ads across all the states that vote Tuesday.

Romney signaled that he intends to stick to his core campaign message of fixing the economy and reducing unemployment in a nation still recovering from the worst recession in decades.

"More jobs, less debt and smaller government ??you're going to hear that" over and over in the states ahead, he said Tuesday night.

Despite the close race in Michigan, Romney powered to an easy victory in Arizona, and the combined effect is precious momentum over Santorum in the most turbulent Republican presidential race in a generation. Romney tweeted his delight: "I take great pride in my Michigan roots, and am humbled to have received so much support here these past few weeks."

The Super Tuesday races could go a long way toward determining which Republican will take on Democratic President Barack Obama this fall.

Romney will campaign Wednesday in Ohio before he flies to North Dakota. Santorum was already campaigning in Ohio when the verdict came in from Michigan.

Gingrich and Paul made little effort in Michigan or Arizona, pointing instead to next week's collection of contests in all corners of the country.

Gingrich is campaigning Wednesday in Georgia, the state he represented in the House for 20 years. Contests there and in Tennessee give him an opportunity to breathe some life back into his bid. He won in South Carolina but struggled in Florida.

Romney's Arizona triumph came in a race that was scarcely contested, and he pocketed all of the 29 Republican National Convention delegates at stake in the winner-take-all state. He won by 47 percent to Santorum's 27 percent.

Michigan's primary was as different as it could be ??a hard-fought and expensive contest that Romney could ill afford to lose and Santorum made every effort to win.

In Michigan, 30 delegates were apportioned according to the popular vote. Two were set aside for the winner of each of the state's 14 congressional districts. The remaining two delegates were likely to be divided between the top finishers in the statewide vote.

With his victory in Arizona, Romney had 163 delegates, according to the Associated Press count, compared with 83 for Santorum, 32 for Gingrich and 19 for Paul. It takes 1,144 to win the nomination at the convention in Tampa this summer.

The lengthening GOP nomination struggle has coincided with a rise in Obama's prospects for a new term. A survey released Tuesday shows consumer confidence at the highest level in a year, and other polls show an increase in Americans saying they believe the country is on the right track.

Along with the improving economy, the long and increasingly harsh campaign, in which Gingrich and Santorum have challenged Romney as insufficiently conservative, has prompted some GOP officials to express concern about the party's chances of defeating Obama.

If nothing else, the unexpected clash on Romney's home field dramatized that two months into the campaign season ??after nearly a dozen primaries and caucuses ??the GOP race to pick a nominee remains unpredictable.

Unopposed for renomination, Obama timed a campaign-style appearance before United Auto Workers Union members in Washington for the same day as the Michigan primary. Attacking Republicans, he said assertions that union members profited from a taxpayer-paid rescue of the auto industry in 2008 are a "load of you-know-what."

All the Republicans running for the White House opposed the bailout, but even in the party's Michigan primary a survey of voters leaving polling places showed about 4 in 10 supported it.

Michigan loomed as a key test for Romney as he struggled to reclaim his early standing as front-runner in the race. But Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, rolled into the state on the strength of surprising victories on Feb. 7 in caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado and a nonbinding primary in Missouri.

Santorum quickly sought to stitch together the same coalition of conservatives and tea party activists that carried him to a narrow victory in the Iowa caucuses that opened the campaign nearly two months ago.

The Super Tuesday television advertising wars were already under way. Romney and Restore Our Future, the super PAC that supports him, have spent more than $3 million combined on ads in Ohio.

Nancy K. Kaufman: Commission on the Status of Women: Women's Role in Advancing Change

The announced theme of the fifty-sixth session of the Commission on the Status of Women taking place in New York from February 27 to March 3 -- the empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development, and current challenges -- isn't focused per se on conflict. However, many assert that much of the famine and starvation that afflicts women and children is the result of politics -- not of an absolute lack of food, but its inequitable distribution. And the politics of conflict resolution too often leaves families in dire economic straits, even when a truce prevails. More devastating, women and children have been the victims of rape, abuse, and sexual slavery during and after conflict. Women are not only the "injured bystanders" in war; they are too often its target. In too many cases, few governmental resources are devoted to dealing with the aftermath of such horrors.

Could women actually make a difference and change the equation when it comes to peacemaking in the broadest sense? They could if permitted to represent the interests of communities and families on the ground. Yet in a study of 24 major peace processes since 1992, UN Women (the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women) found that women composed only 2.5 percent of signatories, 3.2 percent of mediators, 5.5 percent of witnesses and 7.6 percent of negotiators. When women's interests are not represented at the negotiation tables, in the post-resolution restructuring process, or in the governance bodies that are established, the interests of children and families are almost always omitted from discussions.

The United Nations recognized this reality when it passed UN Resolution 1325 almost 12 years ago. That resolution calls on member states to "ensure increased representation of women at all decision-making levels in national, regional, and international institutions and mechanisms for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflict." The resolution urges not only that women be engaged in conflict resolution, but that governments "adopt a gender perspective" to ensure that the interests of women are fully integrated into any conflict resolution efforts. As many other countries adopted national action plans to implement the resolution -- 25 have to date -- the US has lagged behind. In fact, the US hasn't even ratified 1325. The issuance of a "US National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security" by the State Department on December 11, 2011 is, therefore, a very welcome development.

Israel, on the other hand, did ratify 1325, but it has yet to devise an action plan. Nevertheless, the Knesset enacted a mandate to include diverse women on public bodies established by the government on issues of national importance, including peace negotiations. When the law was more or less ignored, the organization Itach-Maaki Women Lawyers for Social Justice petitioned the Israeli courts to force its implementation. Twice the court ordered the government to appoint women, and now all-male committees have pretty much disappeared. Much still remains to be done in Israel and the US. In Israel the debate continues on how to include marginalized women. In the US, while many in policy circles have argued for women's role, the public discussion is really only just beginning with the Obama Administration's plan.

Integrating women isn't always an easy task. Traditional views of women, despite their role in communal social and economic life, can discourage them from speaking up on their own behalf. Even in situations where women do enjoy equal political rights, the overarching politics of a conflict can derail the efforts to affect conflict outcome. The newfound commitment of the US to the values of Resolution 1325 could revolutionize the business of achieving peace -- peace, based for a change, on the concerns critical to half the population. Women's participation might just be what current peace-making efforts need so progressive change can be realized in the world.

Small Home Improvements ? What You Can Do Without A Loan ...

Home improvements can be accomplished without loan refinancing of any kind. Most of the time, no loan home improvement options are the best.

Home improvement jobs, especially multiple small ones, can be accomplished over time and can make your house look fantastic. You might have to hire someone if you are going to add on a room to your home, yet most the time this is not what you will be doing. If you take the time to clean your home, and a few walls, and add a few decorations, it will literally look like you spent thousands on a home improvement spree. The strategies in this article will help you accomplish no-loan home improvements that would otherwise cost thousands of dollars.

We consider the above thoughts and suggestions must be taken into account in any conversation on mortgage relief act. They are by no means all there is to learn as you will easily discover. We feel you will find them to be very helpful in a lot of ways. It should not need to be said that you must perform closer examination of all relevant points. We are not finished, and there are just a couple of very strong recommendations and tips for you. Clean your house from top to bottom. Organizing the clutter is one thing, but do more than that. Clutter is one of those things that builds up whether you want it to, or not. Every so often, it is necessary to clean the house from top to bottom, for that reason. You need to go through all of the closets, shelves, and drawers in all of the rooms and sort them out. Yard sales can make some extra money, especially when you decide a lot of the things you were keeping, can be gotten rid of. You will almost feel like you are living in a totally different home when you go through your house and thoroughly clean it. A clutter free home will seem like brand new, with its new clean and shiny look. To save lots of money on your home improvement project, you should try painting your house to make it look better without having to remodel that much. Just start with a couple of rooms and you will see that it won?t cost that much. The decision-making process is all up to you which is the best part about painting on your own. Painting your rooms begins with getting the right color of paint, or choosing a new color that you think would go better in the rooms you are painting. Painting is a blast!

Another thing you can do is change your appliances. Many home improvement stores have sales on many items; just pick a couple of them up and replace the old ones in your home. New appliances usually come with warranties and insurance policies which is good. Some appliances come with free delivery and they will even install it in your home if necessary. Your kitchen can look literally brand-new by changing out the dishwasher, refrigerator, and range. What?s more, the newer machines usually use quite a lot less energy than the older models. To make your house look better than ever, budget a meager amount of money and make your house look great. As you can see, you don?t have to spend cash you do not have to make your house look great. It is simply not necessary to take out a home improvement loan. Just find simple things that you can do to make your house look better. In fact, if you just clean your house thoroughly, and add a coat of paint here and there, you will totally improve the way your home looks. Projects that require a little more work may require you to find an expert and discover what needs to be done by utilizing their expertise.

NYPD monitoring of Muslims enters mayoral race

New York Police Department spying operations began after the 2001 terror attacks with unusual help from a CIA officer. "If there are threats or leads to follow, then the NYPD's job is to do it," Bloomberg said. "The law is pretty clear about what's the requirement, and I think they follow the law. We don't stop to think about the religion. We stop to think about the threats and focus our efforts there." (AP Photo/Henny Ray Abrams, File)

(AP) ? Potential candidates for Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office are taking stands on the New York Police Department's surveillance of Muslim students, ranging from cautious support to a warning about curtailing civil liberties.

Bloomberg, who leaves office after the 2013 election, has said that he finds "worrisome" the idea that his successor might abandon NYPD policies that have kept New Yorkers safe.

The NYPD used undercover officers and informants to infiltrate Muslim student groups at a dozen colleges in New York City, upstate New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, documents obtained by The Associated Press show. The monitoring was part of the department's anti-terrorism efforts.

But Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said in a statement to the AP over the weekend that "it is troubling when people are subject to surveillance and investigation simply because they are members of a particular group."

However, the Democrat, a declared candidate for mayor, praised the city's police department for doing an "extraordinary job protecting our city," as long as authorities make sure anti-terrorism efforts "do not trample on the civil liberties that all citizens have a right to enjoy."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday that his department is "continuing to do what we believe necessary to protect the city, pursuant to the law." He did not elaborate.

NYC Comptroller John C. Liu, who is expected to run for mayor, praised "the dedicated men and women of the NYPD" for doing "an extraordinary job of keeping New Yorkers safe." But in a statement, he also warned that "we should not as a matter of policy profile people based on religion or race ? it goes against everything this city stands for."

Liu, a Queens Democrat, faces a federal investigation into his fundraising operation after reports of inconsistencies in his campaign finances.

When asked about the NYPD surveillance, media executive Tom Allon didn't hedge.

"I support the tactics that they've used," said Allon, who plans to run as both a Liberal and a Democrat. "I think we've got a much larger problem here, which is making sure there's no terrorist attack on New York."

Three other possible candidates, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former comptroller Bill Thompson, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Electro-magnetic Technology: a significant ... - New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

For many years electromagnetic technology has been used in diagnosis and therapeutic devices, in both orthodox and complementary medicine. In the first half of the 20th century many of these devices were slightly empirical and therefore often considered ineffective. The arrival of the pharmaceutical revolution seriously reduced the use of electromagnetism, particularly in mainstream orthodox medicine. During the last 50 years, however, the introduction of sound, orthodox experimental work, such as that carried out by Dr R.O.Becker in New York, has quantified both the damaging and therapeutic results of electro-magnetic fields. This has led to the publication of numerous specialist papers and books on the topic.

Now in complementary medical fields, such as acupuncture and vibrational medicine, the arrival of computer technology and advanced electronics has led to the development of effective diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

The Q Energy Spa (Q2 Spa or Bio-Electric Field Enhancer BEFE) is one of these tools and represents a serious advance in the development of electromagnetic medicine. Having personally worked with the Q Energy Spa in my practice and studied reports of its success among associates, I am convinced that electromagnetic or ?energetic? medicine will play a much bigger role in the future.

If we are beings of energy, then it follows that we can be influenced by energy

Quantum Field Science asks that we see all life, organic and inorganic, as a vast network of energetic fields that work together in a wonderfully paradoxical way. The enigma is that while this network is incredibly intricate and complicated, it is also easily accessible and changeable. When we apply this philosophy to our bodies and to our lives, we begin to see the sheer size of the self- empowerment this understanding of life gives us.

Whilst from one perspective we may be a bag of self organised bacteria,we are also a complex network of energy waves, which change and create moment by moment ? our bodies, our lives and our world are all impacted. Every part of our body is made from this energy ?substance,? and in reality every tissue, call and organ resonates or vibrates at specific frequencies.

Quantum Field Science sees humans as networks of complex energy fields that interface with cellular and physical systems. By constantly balancing and rebalancing the energy fields, Quantum Field Science allows the individuals own innate intelligence to restore order. There is a connection between Quantum Field Science and conventional medicine. If our interlocking energy systems become out of balance, there may be pathological symptoms that show up on a emotional, mental, spiritual and physical level.

When the energy levels are reduced, the body becomes weakened. Quantum Field Science will not only give future doctors a different view on the factors behind disease, but also show more effective strategies by which we will remain healthy.

These imbalances can be corrected using the Q2 Energy Spa foot bath technology.

Louisiana Industry Professionals Discuss Music Business

In an industry that changes more than the weather, The Heat Magazine wanted to enlighten artists and music business stakeholders with pertinent information. ?A superficial glance ?at the music industry can deceive an upcoming artist or company. ?The Heat Magazine realizes the importance in educating artists.

One of the first issues addressed in this discussion concerns copyrighting and publishing.?It is imperative that all music and lyrics are copyrighted through the Library of Congress. ?Copyrights protect an artist from infringement by other artists, companies, and it also helps identify owners and songwriters of a particular tune. ?Although a song is copyrighted once recorded, it has to be legally copyrighted using the correct forms.

A buzz word in the music industry is publishing. ?Publishing deals with mechanical, performance, and sheet music royalties. ?The songwriters can collect upfront monies as well as semester payments based on the magnitude of a song. ?This can be managed by publishing companies ASCAP and BMI and a publisher. ?An artist has to register as a songwriter, ?and a company as a publisher. ?This enables an artist and a company to collect owed royalties. ?For example, if a motion picture uses an artist?s song in a film, royalties are owed by the film company to the artists and other co-owners of the publishing rights on that song. ?If another artist uses a portion of your song or creates a cover, then royalties are due to the artist and publisher. ?This is a streamlined example but the artist ?can receive money anytime another entity uses or makes money with his/her song or portions of it. ?Royalties can be collected from record sales, radio/video play, club performances, and sheet music.

The Heat Magazine hopes this summary helps upcoming artists and companies. ?The next subjects were covered in the following interview:

The Heat Magazine: How important are email blasts?

LaJoan of Dream Management

LaJoan ?of Dream Management: Eblasts are very important. It?s the driving force that spreads your music worldwide to different D.J.s and helps start fan bases in other cities and states. Eblasts are respected more by D.J.?s. ?They rather get it sent to them that way instead of artists filling up their inbox.

The Heat Magazine: How important is artist management?

LaJoan ?of Dream Management: Management is important because it takes the everyday stress of the music business off the artist. I think everyone needs good management to help develop plans, marketing & promotional strategies, make phone calls and take care of other needs the artist has. Having proper management can open many doors that you may not otherwise have access to.

For more information, contact dreammgmt@gmail.com

The Heat Magazine: How important is a publicist?

Arlene Culpepper: As music artists, you need the world to know your particular brand. In order to achieve that, you need press, particularly a social media buzz, including articles regarding your work. Publicists can help brand you and get your art out to the world.

Arlene Culpepper-Assistant Editor of The Heat Magazine/Publicist

The Heat Magazine: How important is the D.J.?

Original Ice Mike 1200: Well the DJ is certainly one of the most important people to an artist. ?The DJ is the soundtrack to the good times in the life of party-goers. If an artist makes a record that is so hot it withstands the test of time, the DJ is the one that is stitching that song in the memory of the people in that time of their lives.

The Heat Magazine: How important is a producer?

Ice Mike 1200-Producer

Original Ice Mike 1200: The producer is probably the most important of all in the career moments and recordings of an artist. ?It?s not just making the beat. That is the music writer but the producer is the one who will not only pick or make the music track, ?but who delivers the final product. The way a song comes across from the left and right speaker. ?Its dynamic ability and spectrum. ?Sometimes a producer can be hired by an artist to give that artist the type of songs the artist may know from the producer?s success and the artist may begin to dive into telling the producer what to do in a production and yet fall upon the same average wave of success as they were already at. It?s a factor of not letting their producer do what he was hired for.

When choosing a producer, it must be someone you can have faith in with your job. Otherwise an artist may very well see others achieve more success from the same producer. Techniques in recording, ?pulling out the best in an artist, or stopping an artist from overusing their talent are all the call of a producer. The object is to have an undeniable music work before any person outside of a studio hears it. If a DJ has to say it is not mixed right, or an A&R has to say it takes too long to get to the good part,or if a consumer has to say, Why isn?t loud like I heard it in concert, 9 times out of ten you just lost one for good, who would have played it, signed it, or bought it! Production is a craft not just a title.

For more information, contact icemike1200@yahoo.com.

The Heat Magazine applauds the panelists for sharing valuable knowledge concerning the complex music business. ?The entertainment industry is much more than singing, dancing, and rapping.

Gold IRA: Options For Investing In Gold Using A Self-Directed IRA Or ...

The past few years have proven to be incredible for gold investors, and as a result more and more people are looking for ways to invest in Gold using their IRA and 401(k). The good news is there are many options available to you for investing in Gold using your retirement accounts, but depending on which type of gold investment you wish to make, you may need a different type of retirement account.

Investing in Gold with a Traditional IRA

A traditional IRA is a retirement account under your control that is held at a brokerage (ie Fidelity, Edward Jones, etc.). With these accounts you typically have the ability to invest in whatever options are offered by the brokerage, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETF?s, etc. With precious metals ? gold in particular ? performing so well of late, there are a lot of funds now that offer investors the ability to invest in gold. If your broker doesn?t offer the fund you want, you can easily move your IRA over to a different broker who does ? you control the account. Here are a few of the options you should have available to you in a traditional IRA account:

Gold Mutual Funds:
Mutual funds can offer gold investment exposure, however, make sure you read through the fund?s prospectus carefully to ensure you fully understand what they are getting. A mutual fund might call themselves a gold investment fund, but what that exactly constitutes is open for debate. Do they lump gold in with precious metals? Do they require a certain percentage of assets to remain invested in gold bullion? What percentage of assets do they allow to be invested in gold mining companies? If they allow investments into gold mining companies, what percentage of those companies? revenues must be derived from gold mining? These are just a few of the answers you need to look for in the prospectus. In addition, with mutual funds you need to pay attention to management fees as well. Here is a list of precious metal mutual funds.

Gold ETFs:
ETFs have become much more popular over the years thanks to their lower management fees. Unlike mutual funds, ETFs aren?t actively managed, which helps keep their fees low. If you are looking for a true gold investment, ETFs are going to be your best bet. As with mutual funds, you need to pay attention to asset allocation, but there are options available that only invest in gold bullion and also offer low expense rates.

If you want to invest in gold, and gold only, you can look at something like SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) or iShares Gold Trust (IAU). Or, if you want to diversify into a basket of precious metals, there are options for that as well. Again, just make sure to read through the documentation carefully so you understand what you are investing in. Here is a list of precious metal ETFs.

Gold Mining Stocks:
If you want some exposure to gold, but are looking for additional upside potential, gold mining stocks might be for you. While gold mining stocks are impacted by the price of gold, it is important to remember that there are many other factors that can cause gold mining stocks to go up or down beyond the price of gold. Here are some additional things that can impact share value for gold mining stocks:

  • How much does it cost the gold miner to get their gold out of the ground? Is this cost increasing or decreasing?
  • The amount of gold the company is expected to have in their mines (gold reserves). Is the company increasing this through new mining endeavors or acquisitions, or is this number decreasing?
  • Faith in management and leadership
  • Is the company an acquisition target for larger companies? Gold mining companies are bought and sold all the time as larger fish look for ways to expand their gold reserves. If a small company recently discovered a new large new mine, or doesn?t have the resources to fully take advantage of the mines they are currently operating, it is likely they are being looked at closely by larger companies as a potential acquisition target.
  • In addition to gold, there will also be other precious metals present in the mines. What additional metals are being mined? What are the values of these, and the corresponding cost of extraction?

This list is not meant to be exhaustive, but simply to get you thinking about all the different things that can impact share price beyond gold price increases and decreases.

Here is a list of gold mining companies.

The Traditional 401(k) For Gold Investments

401(k) accounts can sometimes be tricky for investors looking for ways to invest in alternative investments like gold. Typically these accounts are controlled by your employer, and as a result you are restricted to the investment options offered as part of your employer?s plan. If you don?t like them, your only option is to leave the company, at which point you could roll those funds into an IRA.

If your company offers a self-directed 401(k) plan, which allows you to choose whichever investments you want that are offered by the broker (ie Charles Schwab, E-Trade, etc.), then theoretically you have all the same options available to you that the IRA investor does (detailed above). However, the more likely scenario is that your investment options are limited to a select number of mutual funds and/or ETFs. There might be one or two funds available to you that track precious metals or commodities, but that is about the best you can hope for in this case. The problem is that when you buy into a fund investing in commodities or precious metals, you are not getting a true investment in gold. Sure, the fund might invest in gold, but it is also likely investing in silver, copper and other metals. If it is a commodity fund, then along with gold, you will also be investing in agricultural items like corn and coffee.

The ultimate Gold IRA ? The Self-Directed IRA

A self-directed IRA gives you the most options for investing in gold. The difference between a traditional IRA and a self-directed IRA, is that a self-directed IRA custodian will allow you to invest in non-traditional assets ? in addition to traditional ones (stocks, bonds, mutual funds & ETFs). With a traditional IRA you can invest in gold bullion through an ETF, but you can?t actually buy the bullion itself, nor can you buy gold coins.

A self-Directed IRA allows you to invest in everything available to traditional IRA gold investors, but in addition you can also purchase physical gold bullion and gold coins. One caveat to this is that you are not allowed to invest in collectables inside retirement accounts ? so you cannot invest in collectable coins. The guideline the IRS has set is that the coin needs to be at least 99.5% pure to qualify as an investment. Also remember that if you buy physical gold bullion or gold coins, you need to account for storage and insurance costs.

Those Who Can't ? Self-Publish. Really? | Marcy Kennedy & Lisa ...

A lot of people put ?write a book? on their bucket list. Thanks to Amazon, Smashwords, and fee-based publishing companies, having a book with your name on the spine is easier than ever. There?s never been a better time to be an author, never been more options, but simply being published means very little now.

When everyone is special, then no one is.

The Author Is Now In Control
Authors are entrepreneurs. Gone are the days of the solitary writer holed up in a writing cave never interacting with readers. There?s no longer a stigma attached to self-publishing, the stigma is attached to books that do poorly. Your book must earn respect now with sales and Amazon rankings determining value, not the name of the publisher on the spine. Indie and self-publishing avenues (digital especially) have leveled the playing field. But with privilege comes responsibility. For the first time writers have choices ? you can traditionally publish or self publish or both, but either way the burden of responsibility for success rests with the author.

A Leveled Playing Field
Traditional publishers have always offered distribution, something authors couldn?t get anywhere else. The cover art, editing, interior design are all services that many publishers are outsourcing anyway, but with digital there?s no longer any need for distribution. Barry Eisler made publishing news a few months ago when he turned down a BIG (I mean, never have to write again big) deal from St. Martin?s Press. He was then approached by Amazon to publish with them first digitally and then in paper at a much higher royalty rate. He didn?t need either St. Martin?s or Amazon for distribution ? he already has a substantial platform, but Amazon offered direct to consumer marketing he could tap into. At the Writer?s Digest Conference (WDC) in New York, Eisler claimed he?s made more on the book published with Amazon, than on any of his traditionally published books. Self-publishing was the smart business decision for him.

Writing Is A Business
Traditional publishers typically offer 17.5% royalty rates, but with self-publishing authors keep upwards of 75% royalties. Writing is a business and the business is connecting with readers. Traditional or self-published doesn?t matter because the self-published or indie author can hire an editor and the same cover designer as the big publishers, and put out a comparably packaged product. But not all books are created equal ? and whether you?re self-published or traditionally published, failing to connect with readers will be reflected in customer reviews and sales numbers. Just putting a book out there doesn?t mean anyone will buy it ? or find it in this crowded marketplace.

Read more about The Business of Writing with this exclusive GWP interview with author and writing teacher James Scott Bell.

A New Business Model
A new business model is emerging. Previously, a traditionally published author would put out 1 new title a year (or less than that), and then build a speaking and teaching career beneath the writing career. Indie publishers are telling new writers to publish 3-5 books a year to keep readers coming back. Writers must be entrepreneurs. Many of the successful independent authors have a team of writers writing for them ? their name has become a brand ? almost like a fashion label. But this also opens up markets where previously there were none ? like short stories and poetry.

In Summary
If you don?t have a top-notch product (book), don?t have great packaging (interior design, cover art, binding, cover copy), and a social network who will share and recommend your work ? you?re playing the author lotto (and the odds aren?t in your favor).

The average self-published title sells 80 copies. You can?t live off that. But the good news is that those are all things you can control through hard work. It?s a lot of trial and error, learning from what didn?t work as much as what did. These authors spoke of testing titles with Facebook ads, and monopolizing a word through Google ads. It?s a serious, purposeful business model being planned up to two years in advance.

Being traditionally published gives you instant credibility with retailers and to a certain extent readers, but that?s overcome with reader reviews, blogger reviews, Amazon rankings, etc. This is a really exciting time to be a writer. Authors no longer need the brick&mortar bookstore, the agent or New York publisher to be a success (whether publishing digitally or not) and that?s changed a lot of things.
