Lindsay Lohan on New Year's Eve Hosting Gigs: Pass!

Lindsay Lohan is adamant that she is proud of the progress she's made with the judge in her probation case and as a result, she's planning a low key New Year's.

She's even passing up six-figure paydays as a result.

The 25-year-old resurgent train wreck has gotten a bunch of offers to host some ragers on December 31, but has stunningly turned down each and every one.

Lindsay Lohan, Sweater

According to reports, Lindsay is desperately trying to change her party girl image and feels that staying away from NYE madness is a step in the right direction.

Seriously, this is true!

LiLo's decision will cost her big bucks, as she's been offered upwards of $100K to ring in New Year's Eve at various venues. But long term, it's not worth it to her.

The nearly seven-figure check she just got for her Playboy photos should ease the pain somewhat, as well. Imagine, nearly $1M for some Lindsay Lohan pics!

Saturday night, Lindsanity plans to ring in 2012 with a few close friends at her home, though she may go out to dinner beforehand. Girl, we hardly know ye!

Obama OK's online gambling in states (Politico)

Merry Christmas to the online gambling industry.

The Obama administration has cleared the way for states to legalize online poker and other forms of virtual gambling with the release of a new interpretation of the law, reports the Associated Press.

The Justice Department opinion, dated September but only released Friday, holds that the Wire Act of 1961 does not make it illegal for states to use the internet to sell lottery tickets to adults.

Previously, the Justice Department has held that wagers through telecommunications that cross state lines or international borders were illegal.

The question at issue in the Justice Department?s decision was confined to whether states like Illinois and New York could sell lottery tickets online to in-state adults, but the principles behind the DoJ?s decision has wide-ranging effects throughout the industry.

The Justice Department said that the ?ordinary meaning of the phrase ?sporting event or contest? does not encompass lotteries,? which sparks a precedent in interpretation that could free up states to legalize other forms of virtual gambling.

?The United States Department of Justice has given the online gaming community a big, big present,? said I. Nelson Rose, a gaming law expert who consults for governments and the industry, according to the AP.

The new decision would eliminate ?almost every federal anti-gambling law that could apply to gaming that is legal under state laws,? Rose wrote on his blog.

If a state were to legalize intra-state gambling, ?there is simply no federal law that could apply,? given the new decision, he said, according to the AP.

Star players shine as NBA makes Christmas return (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Derrick Rose all shined as the NBA tipped off in style on Christmas Day with some sparkling action putting aside memories of the five month long lockout.

The Miami Heat immediately showed why they are title favorites by beating last season's champions the Dallas Mavericks, while the New York Knicks enjoyed a surprise victory over the Boston Celtics at Madison Square Garden and the Chicago Bulls produced a great comeback to beat the Los Angeles Lakers.

The games were part of a five-game opening day to the delayed and reduced 66-game regular season after the dispute between players and owners over a new collective contract ended earlier this month.

When they finally reached a new collective bargaining agreement, that was ratified on December 8, the teams had just 17 days to get their rosters filled, hold brief training camps, complete a couple of warm-ups and get ready for Sunday's openers.

The opening day quickly gave fans a taste of what was at risk with some great displays from top performers.

The Heat ruined the Mavericks' championship celebrations with a resounding 105-94 victory led by standout performances from James and team-mate Dwyane Wade in Dallas.

The Heat had to wait in their locker room as the Mavericks raised their championship banner minutes before the start of the game as Dallas players, wearing "2011 NBA Champions" on the back of their tracksuits, celebrated.

But when the game got underway, finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki and team-mates Jason Kidd and Jason Terry were swept aside by an impressive Heat,

Miami were 97-65 up after three quarters, before allowing Dallas, who never led, to make the score respectable in the fourth.

James scored 37 points and had 10 rebounds and six assists while Dwyane Wade contributed 26 points with eight rebounds and six assists, as the Heat's two biggest names offered an early reminder of their quality.

Last season's league MVP, Rose, crowned a superb comeback from the Bulls with a one-handed running shot over Pau Gasol to win the game 88-87 with 4.8 seconds remaining.

Kobe Bryant's last gasp attempt to steal it back for the Lakers was dashed as his shot at the buzzer was blocked by Luol Deng.

Rose scored 22 points with Deng making 21 as the Bulls overturned a six-point lead in the final two minutes while the Lakers missed four free throws in the final 1:40.

Bryant scored 28 points for the Lakers but will be disappointed to have started the season with a home loss.

Carmelo Anthony was the top performer for New York, scoring 37 points as the Knicks enjoyed a 106-104 victory over the Celtics.

The Knicks were fastest out of the blocks taking a 34-23 lead at the end of the first quarter and leaving Celtics head

coach Doc Rivers fuming at his team, telling them they were "playing soft."

Boston trailed 62-52 at half-time but piled on 35 points in the third quarter to lead by eight heading into the last period.

The Celtics had won their last eight games against the Knicks but New York fought back this and Anthony's two free throws with 16.3 seconds left proved to be the game winners as Boston failed to score again as Marquis Daniels missed a three pointer then Kevin Garnett missed a 16 footer at the buzzer.

Rajon Rondo was the top scorer for Boston with 31 points while Anthony scored 17 points in the last quarter for New York.

Rangers C Torrealba suspended by Venezuelan league (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Texas Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba was suspended Monday from Venezuela's professional baseball league for 66 games for striking an umpire.

Torrealba issued an apology, saying he was embarrassed about his argument with a home plate umpire after striking out Friday. He angrily put a hand on the umpire's mask and shoved him. He was then ejected.

"I wanted to express my sincere apologies to all parties for my actions," Torrealba said in his statement. "I have extended an apology to the Rangers organization as well. I am embarrassed for my conduct, and personally relayed that feeling to the umpire after that night's game.

"On the field, I strive to be an example for children, especially those in my native Venezuela, and I regret my actions," he said. "I understand the reactions to the incident and will make every effort to set a positive example in the future."

League President Jose Grasso Vecchio called Torrealba's behavior unacceptable and a violation of league rules.

Torrealba plays for the Caracas Lions when not playing in the majors.

His agent, Melvin Roman, said Torrealba acknowledged he got carried away in the heat of the moment.

7 die in latest school bus accident in China

BEIJING The death toll in China's latest crash involving transportation for students has risen to seven, state media said Monday.

The official China Daily newspaper said an additional student had died in hospital, after four students and two adults were killed Saturday in southwestern China when the overloaded van taking them home crashed into a 195-foot (60-meter) deep valley.

Xinhua News Agency said the eight-seat van was carrying 12 students and the two adults. The others were all injured, two seriously.

The newspaper said the students were aged 14 or 15 and were in junior high school.

Xinhua said the crash happened on a mountainous road in Yunnan province. A local government official confirmed the accident but would not give any details. A local news portal in Yunnan showed a picture of the van, with all its sides and roof crushed in.

Badly maintained school transport has been the focus of public anger in recent weeks after a series of accidents in which children were killed on their way to and from school, leading China's safety regulator to demand immediate action to improve safety aboard frequently overloaded and badly maintained school buses.

Earlier this month, a school bus taking primary students home slipped off a country road into an irrigation ditch in the eastern province of Jiangsu, killing 15 children. Officials later acknowledged the bus was overloaded.

In the worst recent accident, 19 children and two adults were killed last month when a nine-seat private kindergarten van packed with 62 students crashed head-on with a truck in northwest Gansu province.

The crashes came amid a national debate over the poor condition of Chinese school buses and chronic underfunding of public schools, particularly in rural areas, which have lagged far behind cities over the past three decades of rapid economic development.

Road safety is also a serious problem in China, with many accidents caused by poorly maintained roads and bad driving habits.

Bishop says renewal must come from within Church itself

THE Catholic Church in Ireland must renew itself from within rather than blame its demise on society, culture or growing secularisation, the Archbishop of Dublin warned in his Christmas homily. After another year when the Church's standing has taken a further battering, with the publication of the Cloyne Report, Dr Diarmuid Martin said "renewal in the Church must first come from conversion within the Church".Speaking at midnight mass in Dublin's Pro-Cathedral on Christmas Eve, Dr Martin said: "It is very easy to point the finger and say that it is all due to society or to culture or to secularisation and even to hostility against faith".

"Conversion is not about fleeing from the realities of the world and society and culture and secularisation, it is about understanding them in a different light," he added.

Despite taking an apparent swipe earlier this month at social Catholics -- those who only go to church for big religious occasions -- Dr Martin welcomed "those whose bonds with Church life have slackened, but for whom this night still has a special place in their hearts" to midnight mass.

"I greet those who bear within them the hurt and wounds and doubts of life's hardships, especially if that hurt has sprung from their experience of the Church," he said. "All of us here this evening belong together."

Dr Martin said the Church must not bee seen as the establishment, but must return to a simpler message.

"In today's world and in today's Ireland there are many who are seeking to see where God belongs in their lives. They seek to understand and perhaps rekindle the faith that they have inherited. That heritage had however for many lost its simplicity.

Kindness

"The starting point of their search for adult faith is all too often still the abstract God of ideas and ideologies and the theological formulae of their youth. Faith in God can only mature when we unite and identify ourselves with this Jesus who appears as the revelation of the loving kindness of God."

In his Christmas homily, Cardinal Sean Brady said he hoped Ireland will become "a more neighbourly place" next year."My hope and prayers for Ireland 2012 is that we become, once again, a more caring and neighbourly place especially in these austere recessionary times," Cardinal Brady said at Christmas Day mass in St Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh."May we rediscover more clearly the spirit of generosity, reverence of the sacred, respect for creation, that have been our hallmark since the time of Saint Patrick. Deep down, I believe, we all yearn for the gentler, more compassionate society that Christmas represents."
