The Social Security Disability process has improved some over the years, but there is more to do to reduce the hearing backlog according to the Fiscal Year 2012 Inspector General Statement on the Social Security Administration?s Major Management and Performance Challenges.
According to the report, at the end of September 2012, the backlog of Social Security Disability (SSD) claims was about 817,000 cases. Although Social Security Disability average processing time has dropped by about 31 percent from an average of 514 days in Fiscal year 2008, the average processing time in 2012 is still 353 days. This processing time takes its toll on families awaiting their Social Security Disability benefits.
The number of Social Security Disability claims continues to increase. According to the report, Social Security received over 3.3 million initial and 836,000 reconsideration claims in 2011. It received about 3.2 million initial and over 832,000 reconsideration claims in 2012
