The death of counterfeiting? Canada?s new plastic banknotes will be nearly impossible to fake
Canada?s gradual shift to slick, cleaner, synthetic banknotes won?t just mean your money can stand more wear, will not tear and, for the first time, will be recycled into other products instead of destroyed.
The Bank of Canada and the RCMP hope that once the polymer-based notes are in circulation ? starting in November with the $100 bill ? they?ll also be all but impossible to fake.
More related to this story
Canada has already made strides in limiting counterfeiters? ability to reproduce Canadian money, after an alarming surge earlier this decade, Bank of Canada and RCMP data show. But despite the growing impression that we?ve become a cashless society, Ottawa says half of all financial transactions in Canada still involve cash, which means faith in banknotes? authenticity still makes the economy go ?round.
Beefed-up security features on the current stock of cotton-paper notes, and an aggressive campaign to train retailers to spot imposters, have helped bring the number of counterfeit bills found each year to 35 per 1 million in circulation, after a rash of fraud between 2001 and 2004 brought that number to a peak of 470 per million bills.
But even 35 per million, which translates into a small fraction of 1 per cent of the value of all bills in circulation, is higher than the share found each year in Australia, where polymer-based currency was first introduced in 1988.
Senior Bank of Canada officials weren?t ready to claim counterfeiters would never again be able to outsmart the technology and security features being used to make Canadian money. However, at a briefing Monday in Ottawa, they said they?re confident it will be much harder to pull a fast one on any retailer who knows what features to look for.
The introduction of the $100 bills this fall, and the $50 notes next March, will really just be a dress rehearsal for late 2012, when the central bank rolls out the new $20 bills. At the moment, that denomination and its almost exclusive presence in bank machines represents more than half of all notes in circulation, according to a BoC background paper on the new money.
Central bank officials said they are working with the country?s financial institutions to encourage more to put additional $50 bills in cash machines, and the background paper suggests officials also hope the higher-security notes will quash the sense that it?s harder to use bigger bills.
?In some regions in 2002, almost one in ten Canadian retailers displayed a sign indicating that they did not accept $100 bills, counterfeits of which had triggered the problem in 2001,? according to the paper. ?Confidence in banknotes, once lost, is not easily regained; although 99 per cent of retailers now accept $100 notes, the perception persists that these notes are ?difficult to spend.? ?
Most Canadians can tell you that where higher bills are accepted, they?re accepted rather begrudgingly. So, will the new notes mean an end to the days of standing at a checkout mortified as the cashier holds your Borden or King to the light to see if you?re a deadbeat in disguise?
Maybe. Unless, of course, the real reason many retailers prefer smaller bills is to deter against armed robbers, not counterfeiters.

Mexico nabs leader of cult-like La Familia cartel
This undated image taken from the Mexican Attorney General's rewards program website on June 21, 2011, shows the alleged leader of the La Familia cartel, Jose de Jesus Mendez Vargas, alias "El Chango,'' or "The Monkey." Mexico's security spokesman said on Tuesday June 21, 2011, that federal police have caught Mendez Vargas, one of Mexico's most-wanted drug lords.
MEXICO CITY?Federal authorities apprehended the leader of the cult-like, pseudo-Christian La Familia cartel on Tuesday, saying they had dealt a debilitating blow to a major organized crime group that terrorized western Mexico.Jose de Jesus Mendez Vargas, alias El Chango, or "The Monkey," was arrested in the central state of Aguascalientes without confrontation or casualties, said federal security spokesman Alejandro Poire.
A state official who was not authorized to speak on the record said Mendez was taken at a federal police checkpoint, but authorities didn't provide more details.
"With this arrest, what remained of the structure of this criminal organization has been destroyed," Poire told a news conference.
With the death of La Familia founder and leader Nazario Moreno Gonzalez in December, Poire said Mendez was "the last remaining head of a criminal group responsible for homicides, kidnappings, extortion, corruption and even cowardly attacks on the authorities and civilian population."
But the leadership of a violent splinter group, known as the Knights Templar, remains at large.
President Felipe Calderon personally lauded the arrest on his Twitter account, calling it a "big blow" to organized crime. The cartel was born in Calderon's home state of Michoacan in 2006, prompting him to deploy thousands of federal police there and warning that La Familia was corrupting local officials, extorting businesses and terrorizing the population.
According to the reward statement issued by the Attorney General's Office, Mendez was "responsible for the transfer and sale of cocaine, marijuana, crystal methamphetamine in various states of Mexico and the United States of America. He is the alleged mastermind of kidnappings and killings, mainly of members of other criminal organizations."
The government had offered a $2.5 million reward for his capture.
La Familia first appeared four years ago when it rolled five severed heads into a Michoacan nightclub, vowing to protect local citizens from rival cartels.
Moreno set a code of conduct for its members that prohibited the use of hard drugs or dealing them within Mexican territory, even as they gruesomely decapitated foes and sold cocaine and methamphetamine by the ton.
"They believe they are doing God's work, and pass out Bibles and money to the poor," according to a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration profile. "La Familia Michoacana also gives money to school and local officials."
Moreno was killed in December during two days of shootouts between his gang and federal police. After his death, the group split into warring factions, causing increased bloodshed in the state in western Mexico.
Mendez was believed to have remained the leader of the La Familia faction, according to federal police, while messages appeared in March that the Knights Templar sought to replace La Familia.
That name alludes to a Christian order of knights founded in 1118 in Jerusalem to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land after the First Crusade.
Former school teacher and La Familia leader Servando "La Tuta" Gomez is believed to lead the Knights Templar, federal police say. Gomez, who has not been arrested, is wanted in the U.S. for conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine, according to an October 2009 Justice Department indictment.
The indictment says he also may be behind the murder of 12 Mexican federal law enforcement officers whose bodies were found in July 2009 while he still operated under La Familia.
An increase in firefights between factions and clashes with police in Michoacan forced as many as 3,500 people to flee their hamlets in May and seek refuge in churches, schools and recreation centers in larger towns nearby.
Federal police arrested 36 La Familia members a short time later, seizing more than 70 rifles, 20,000 weapon cartridges, three grenades and 14 handguns in an air and land raid that left two officers injured.
Federal Police Commissioner Facundo Rosas said at the time that Mendez's faction had been substantially weakened.
Poire told reporters that with Mendez's arrest, 21 of the country's 37 top drug traffickers have been apprehended or killed since 2009.
More than 35,000 people have died in drug violence since, according to government figures. Local media say the number is closer to 40,000.

Ford brings fantasy baseball to cars. Have we gone too far?
I have a heart-wrenching internal struggle when it comes to in-car connectivity. On the one hand, I love having navigation, my iPod and phone contacts all easily accessed when I'm driving.
On the other hand, I hate looking to my left, and then to my right, to find myself surrounded by folks staring down at their smartphones ? on the highway.
The U.S. Department of Transportation wants to stop distracted driving. Yes, I'm all for that. Ticket those folks staring down at their phones. Tar and feather them. Put them in the gallows. Give their cell numbers to Anthony Weiner. I don't care, just punish them.
But the government isn't actually talking about those folks. It wants to go after cars that are "connected." In the past, I've thought that's the wrong approach. A car computer reading me a text message is no less distracting than driving with my kids in the car ? probably much less distracting, actually. And I don't think the government could prevent my kids from kicking my seat.
The guy reading his BlackBerry could swerve into my lane or not notice traffic in front of him braking. That's serious.
Then Ford announced today that users of its Sync system will soon be able to get fantasy baseball statistics read to them while they're driving.
Seriously?
What are you trying to do, Ford? Are you just lobbing softballs for the government to hit out of the park? I can hear the rhetoric now: "There is no need to get a fantasy baseball score in your car!"
Well, duh. Weather, traffic information. That makes sense and would be considered a benefit to most people.
Sports scores and stock quotes? OK, maybe.
Why not fantasy scores? Well, for one thing, you're not getting your team's scores read to you, just the top players' statistics. So you'll be trying to do math in your head. And for me, that gets distracting. Plus, if you do know that Albert Pujols' two-homer, four-RBI night sinks your chances for the playoffs, you could get road rage pretty easily.
I'm a huge fantasy football junky and listen to sports radio all the time in test cars. But during football season, I don't need to get scores in the car. You know why? Because it takes less than 5 seconds to check my team's stats on a computer or smartphone, and I can do that walking to my car, standing in line at Potbelly or while walking the dog.
So Ford, please stop. Why not focus on making the nice lady who says "Playing Pearl Jam" sound more like a real person and not the wife of the computer from "WarGames"? Thanks.

Personal Finance Daily: Are you ready for shifts in the job market?
Even before the recession, we kept hearing that America?s manufacturing jobs were disappearing and that job growth would likely be found in the health-care and technology sectors. Not so fast. While these statements are still generally true, the reality is that the job market is changing very quickly and many well-paid, middle-class jobs are becoming extinct ? even in health care and technology.

Breaking News: Charities slammed over animal tests
A campaign has been launched to boycott four leading medical charities accused of supporting "horrific" animal experiments.
Welfare group Animal Aid is urging members of the public to halt donations to Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation, the Alzheimer's Society and Parkinson's UK.
The organisation has published a report, Victims of Charity, highlighting charity-funded tests that were said to cause "appalling suffering" to animals such as mice, monkeys, pigs and dogs. Examples included damaging the brains of monkeys with toxic chemicals, slowly destroying dogs' hearts, grafting cancer into animals and the use of diseased genetically engineered "mutants".
The campaign is backed by national newspaper adverts as well as postcards for members of the public to send to the charity chief executives with their comments. Animal Aid is calling on the public to withhold financial support from the four charities until they pledge to stop funding animal experiments.
Director Andrew Tyler said: "Animal Aid is under no illusions as to the pro-animal research lobby's significant financial and political clout. But the British public do not like the idea of animals enduring great suffering to no purpose, and Victims of Charity argues that this is precisely what is happening."
The report, written by a hospital doctor and a veterinary surgeon, is based on published accounts of experimental procedures and reviews in leading specialist journals. In total, 66 charities were identified that used public donations to fund animal research. However, the four named charities were singled out as organisations of "some standing and authority".
Dr David Scott, director of science funding at Cancer Research UK, responded: "In certain areas, research involving animals remains essential to understand, prevent and treat cancer. We do no research with monkeys, dogs or cats. We have strict ethical policies in relation to animals and follow rigorous Government guidelines to ensure that animals are only used where there's no alternative."
Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, said: "The majority of our research programme does not involve animals and where there is no alternative we use maggots, fruit flies, mice and rats only. Our researchers are bound by animal welfare rules, which are the strictest in the world."
Peter Hollins, chief executive of the British Heart Foundation, said: "Our research has contributed to incredible medical advances over the decades. Many adults and children are only alive today thanks to pioneering treatments such as heart failure medicines, pacemakers and heart transplants which couldn't have been achieved without involving animals."
Dr Kieran Breen, director of research and development at Parkinson's UK, said: "Parkinson's UK invests around ?4.6 million per year in a wide range of research projects looking at all aspects of Parkinson's because we are committed to finding better treatments and a cure. A small but vital part of our research involves animals and is rigorously controlled by UK legislation."

Arroyo Grande mayor criticizes grand jury report
June 19, 2011
The mayor of Arroyo Grande blasted a recent grand jury report critical of the South County Sanitation District, calling the conclusions ?personally and professionally offensive.? [Tribune]
Tony Ferrara, one of three members of the district governing board, made the comments at the Wednesday night board meeting.
The report, issued June 2, following extensive reporting by CalCoastNews, concluded there was a?conflict of interest exists between John Wallace, the administrator of the South County wastewater treatment plant, and his engineering firm.
The ?grand jury also found that the district?s board of directors ?failed to recognize or eliminate the issue, and that Wallace?s contract is 25 years old and has never been evaluated, re-bid or modified.
?The reason it?s been there for 25 years is because it works,? Ferrara said. ?It keeps our rates low.?
Ferrara also said the report was based on incomplete information.???You don?t make those kinds of accusations of someone unless you have hard and fast evidence to back it up, and they didn?t have that kind of evidence.?
However, Lori Angello, one of the three board members and president of the Oceano Community Services District, suggested at the meeting that Wallace should continue providing engineering or administration services ? but not both.
?It might be wise to separate the two,? she said.

A Patient's Guide On What To Ask An Endocrinologist
Most endocrine disorders are not deeply understood by patients. A man with diabetes mellitus can say "I'm advised to control my sugar intake" without a strong understanding of why he needs to do so. At times, some patients who have just been referred to the endocrinology department even find it hard to remember that their doctors are called "endocrinologists." We really can't blame them. The endocrine system in itself is complex. It is a group of glands located in different parts of the body which secrete hormones that control reproduction, growth and development, and metabolism. That overview alone is enough for a patient to just stare blankly at the endocrinologist, especially when he or she has little or no background at all on the subject. Even the endocrinologist will find it challenging to explain the problem in simple terms, considering that the system is a very broad subject.
If you are a patient with an endocrine system disorder, you would want to be spared from all those scientific and medical terminologies, and simply concentrate on the information that is most essential about your condition. That will save the breath of your endocrinologist, as well as your energy in understanding the situation.
Patients, know your illness
Endocrinologists share the diagnosis to their patients after a series of confirmatory tests and health history taking. Most of the time, though, the explanation becomes too scientific. This leaves the patient at a loss and can only recall very little information about the diagnosis, which should not be the case. The diagnosis is for the patient. Therefore, it is not enough for him or her to know how the illness is called. The patient has the right to know every important detail about it in a way that is comprehensible to the layman. Patients should know how they could have possibly acquired the illness, if is it treatable, or what should be done for it not to worsen. If there is a need to describe a process, then the explanation must be concise, and the patient's level of understanding should be considered as well. Give the endocrinologist a light nudge if what he's discussing is already beyond comprehension. Patients should also have access to their laboratory and assessment results. Even if the patient cannot make sense of the documents at hand, the endocrinologist can use them as a guide in further explaining the diagnosis.
Patients, know your way out of the illness
The treatment course is undoubtedly the most important information that an endocrinologist should discuss with a patient. Since the treatment course is something that a patient should comply with, it is paramount that the patient should understand it. It should be a partnership action between the endocrinologist and the patient. If there are scheduled procedures, the patient should be well-informed of it and how the procedure is to be done. For medications, endocrinologists should give both the generic name and the brand name, and explain the dosage and frequency to the patient clearly. The patient should also be informed of the treatment schedule and duration. Special considerations and diet restrictions should also be reiterated to the patient accordingly. For example, diabetic patients must be advised to control sweets, while patients with hypothyroidism should wear thick sweatshirts as they are sensitive to cold.
Patients, know your health status
An illness concerning the endocrine is a life-changing factor. The feeling of uncertainty and grief clouds every patient's mind. If you see yourself in this situation, do not be afraid to ask any questions regarding your illness. Patients may ask how serious the illness is, and the endocrinologist should explain it with tact. If there is something that needs to be clarified, raise it without hesitation. Make sure that, before you step out of the office, you have a fairly good idea of your diagnosis and how to manage it.
The endocrine system in itself is complex system that needs to be managed well. If you have been diagnosed with a endocrine illness, it is important for you to fully understand it as well as the treatment that you have been prescribed, the probability of success and the full extent of the side effects. Having that knowledge will allow you to make an informed decision regarding your health.

Nearly 900,000 Fewer Cancer Deaths Since 1990: Report (HealthDay)
FRIDAY, June 17 (HealthDay News) -- There has been a steady drop in cancer deaths in the United States in the past two decades, two American Cancer Society reports find.
This translates into a dramatic decline between 1990 and 2007 -- nearly 900,000 fewer people felled by the disease, the society explained.
"It's getting better for the majority of cancers," said Dr. Iuliana Shapira, director of cancer genetics at Monter Cancer Center at the North Shore-LIJ Health System in New Hyde Park, NY.
Early detection and better treatments are having an impact on cancer death rates, said Shapira, who was not involved in the report. "More people are living with cancer... We are doing better than we did," she said.
Ahmedin Jemal, strategic director of cancer surveillance at the American Cancer Society, added that a decline in the rate of smoking among Americans is also responsible for the drop in deaths from cancer.
Since 1990, he pointed out, cancer deaths have plummeted by about 22 percent in men and 14 percent in women.
Most recently, the rate of cancer incidence in men has hit a plateau after shrinking 1.9 percent each year from 2001 to 2005. For in women, cancer rates have been dropping steadily, 0.6 percent each year since 1998.
Since 1990, deaths from cancer have declined in almost all racial/ethnic groups and since 1998 in both men and women. The only exception is among American Indian/Alaska Native women, where the rate hasn't changed, according to the reports.
Among black and Hispanic men, decreases in cancer deaths during this period were the largest during this time, dropping 2.6 percent and 2.5 percent, respectively.
According to the latest data, lung cancer death rates in women have dropped significantly, after increasing continuously since the 1930s.
But even with these striking downturns, not all segments of the population are seeing equal benefits, partly because of ongoing disparities in cancer care, Jemal said.
Those with the least education, which is a marker for socioeconomic status, are more than twice as likely to die from cancer than the most educated. If these disparities did not exist, more than 60,000 people aged 20 to 64 would not have died from cancer in 2007 alone, the researchers said.
In 2007, cancer deaths among the least educated were 2.6 times higher than those among the most educated, according to the report. The disparity was largest for lung cancer, where the deaths were five times higher among the least educated than among the most educated.
These differences reflect the differences in smoking rates -- 31 percent among men with 12 or fewer years of education smoke, compared with 12 percent of college graduates and 5 percent of men with graduate degrees, the American Cancer Society noted.
These data are included in two new reports from the Society: Cancer Statistics 2011 and Cancer Facts & Figures 2011.
Other highlights of the reports:
- Cancer kills Americans at the rate of about 1,500 people a day.
- Lung cancer accounts for more deaths than any other cancer among both men and women.
- The probability of being diagnosed with an invasive cancer during your life is 44 percent for men and 38 percent for women.
- For men, prostate, lung and bronchus (respiratory system tissue), and colon cancer account for about 52 percent of all newly diagnosed cancers. Prostate cancer accounts for 29 percent of cases in men.
- The three most commonly types of cancer in women in 2011 are breast, lung and bronchus, and colon, which, when combined, account for about 53 percent of cancer cases in women. Breast cancer alone accounts for 30 percent of the cases.
- Lung and bronchus, breast, and colon combined account for almost 50 percent of cancer deaths among men and women.
- Declines in colon cancer deaths reflect increased screening for the disease.
- For men, the reduction in deaths from lung, prostate and colon cancer make up about 80 percent of the total decrease in the cancer deaths.
- For women, a decline in deaths from breast and colon cancers accounts for about 60 percent of the decrease.
This year, the American Cancer Society expects 1,596,670 new cancer cases and 571,950 deaths from the disease in the United States.

Why Tata is worried about Fiat in India
Last updated on: June 17, 2011?15:49 IST
Swaraj Baggonkar in Mumbai
When Ratan Tata said in an interview earlier this week that the four-year-old Tata Motors-Fiat joint venture "has not been as active as we had thought", he finally confirmed what the market has been quite vocal about for the past few months.
At the heart of the problem is Fiat's failure to bring in more models to India -- a fact the Tata Group chairman didn't forget to mention.
While the Tata Group still says it accords great importance to the strategic alliance with Fiat, analysts feel the main reason for the joint venture's indifferent performance (Rs 260 crore -- or Rs 2.60 billion -- loss in 2009-10 which is expected to increase for 2010-11), is its inability to improve its product portfolio.
Fiat's market share was less than 1 per cent last fiscal. In contrast, even Volkswagen, which entered India only in 2007, commands a share of 2.04 per cent.

Due to gross underutilisation of its assets (50 per cent capacity utilisation), mainly the mega car, engine and transmission manufacturing plant at Ranjangaon near Pune, Fiat India posted a staggering cumulative loss of Rs 970 crore (Rs 9.70 billion), in a little more than two years.
Eight months ago, Fiat India Automobile did try to address the problem by bringing in a new team to revitalize its sales, marketing and distribution network. But buyers are still not impressed with the Italian automotive brand.
Fiat sold 21,066 units in FY11, compared with 24,727 units the previous fiscal -- a decline of 14.81 per cent, and this came in a period of high sales growth for almost all automobile companies.
Since the appointment of the new team, sales of Fiat branded cars have dipped over 15 per cent to 13,446 units as against 15,874 units a year ago.

The fall in sales is in sharp contrast to the over 22 per cent sales growth achieved by the car industry in the same period.
Fiat presently sells three models in India, with one of them -- Palio Stile -- not available in the main city markets such as Mumbai, National Capital Region, Bengaluru and Chennai.
Fiat executives say the sales number did not justify the upgradation to BS IV level. Fiat's last model launch, Grande Punto, a premium hatchback, took place two years ago.
While the Punto costing Rs 4.45 lakh, sells an average of around 1,000 units per month, much less than the targeted 2,500 units, the Linea, an upper mid-size sedan costing Rs 661,000, sells an average of 890 units, which is much below the 2,000 units per month targeted mark.

Under the 50:50 joint venture inked in 2007, the two companies are jointly working on distribution network and back-end support, besides co-manufacturing products in Ranjangaon. The facility has a capacity to produce 200,000 cars and 300,000 engines a year.
One of the steps that the JV had taken was that it re-approached some of its dealers asking them to change the way they market their cars. The plan included appointing separate man power and showroom space.
The new sales and marketing initiative demands further investments from the dealers. While some of the dealers welcome the change, many of them agree that Fiat suffers from a low brand recall in India leading to the lackluster demand.
"Fiat cars are not in the affordable range, they are at the premium end. Plus consumers also keep in mind the resale value of the car when they buy a vehicle. Fiat cars generally have a poor resale value compared to say a Maruti or a Hyundai", says a Mumbai-based dealer of Tata Fiat cars.

But Fiat is hoping that the ace up its sleeve is the small car that will be priced below the Palio. At less than Rs 400,000, it is expected to compete with Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motors.
The car, which is currently under development, is expected to be launched by the end of next year and will sport a new 1 litre engine, the same configuration as the Maruti Wagon R and the Hyundai i10.
The new car, Fiat says, will go a long way to allay concerns over mileage of the existing cars in its portfolio.

Fresh iPhone Apps for June 16: Evil Dead, Hanging With Friends, Cell Bound, iQuarterback 2 (Appolicious)
Another big Thursday is upon us, complete with a big offering of new games. Horror fans will be pleased to see the release of the barely hyped but long-awaited Evil Dead, which lets you play through the events of the Sam Raimi cult classic. For something a little cuter and less demon-oriented, grab Hanging With Friends, a turn-based Hangman game from the makers of Words With Friends. After that is a match game for people with a DJ skillset called Cell Bound, where you?ll spin a disc in order to match cells of the same color, and iQuarterback 2, where you can hone your hand-eye coordination and eagle-eye aim.
Evil Dead (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Finally, it?s here ? a top-down action-adventure game based on the cult classic Sam Raimi horror film, The Evil Dead. You play as Ash, Bruce Campbell?s character from the film, and follow the events of the movie as you work through the game?s 30 different levels. Along the way, you?ll wield weapons like axes and shotguns against demonic plants and possessed people.
Evil Dead is divided into two parts ? the autumn levels, which cover the story of the movie, and the winter levels, which create an entirely new story for the game. You get Game Center support so you can track your Evil Dead scores on its leaderboards, and lots of gore as you hack up demons. Also, Evil Dead is currently on sale for its launch, so now?s the time for fans of the film to snag it.
Also available in a free, ad-supported version, Hanging With Friends is just like Words With Friends, the popular Scrabble-like game, only it ditches crosswords for Hangman. The game supports Facebook Connect so you can quickly and easily find friends to play with, and allows you to take on 20 opponents simultaneously, just like Words With Friends.
While Hanging With Friends is a pretty standard Hangman game, it includes a few little improvements to keep the game interesting and help you when you?re stumped. For example, you can use the Instant Replay function to see your opponents guess at the word you?re trying to solve, and you can also gain hints from ?lifelines? that you?ll have to use strategically through the course of the game. Best of all, Hanging With Friends is turn-based, so you can play it on your schedule, whenever you have a second.
Cell Bound (iPhone, iPad) $0.99
Cell Bound is something of a matching game, in which you?ll need to stack cells of all the same color together. The cells float from the outside edges of the screen toward the center of a round plate, where they stick to a peg in the middle. Touch controls let you rotate the plate, along with the cells, so that you can intercept new cells with your groups of old ones. The idea is to keep all the colors the same to score points, while avoiding letting unlike colors bind together or letting the pile become too large.
You get three game modes with Cell Bound: its Blast Mode has cells binding to the wrong color turning black and basically being dead spots you have to clear out. When five cells of the same color are stacked together in Blast Mode, you can tap the center of the screen to eliminate them for a point bonus. Infinite Mode is more easy going, allowing you to keep playing and racking up points until you get bored or too many cells fill the screen. Finally, Timer Mode gives you a set amount of time to pull down as many points as possible by quickly making cell combinations.
Fire off a few laserbeam passes and hone your skills in iQuarterback 2, where you?re the quarterback and you?ll use touch controls to throw passes. The game packs two kinds of levels: those with moving targets, and those with stationary ones. The idea is to touch the screen in order to see the path of the quarterback?s pass, and release to throw. The closer to the bullseye you hit your targets, the more points you?ll earn.
High scores earn your quarterback Fame, which translates into unlocking bonus items and additional stadiums to play in, which can slightly alter the feel of the two levels as well as provide a new backdrop. Others, like special hats, give you Fame boosts during levels to let you earn a bonus. The more high scores you earn, the more cool things you can grab.

Prince Harry Cleared to Return to Afghanistan
He never wanted to leave his unit in Afghanistan. Now Prince Harry has reportedly been cleared to return to front line military service there.
The prince has qualified as an Apache helicopter pilot but will need to finish "conversion to role" training in England before being redeployed.
That will take another seven months, the Guardian states.
A statement from Clarence House says that the specifics of Prince Harry's situation - when he returns to active duty - are the army's to determine.
"Harry is an army pilot and will deploy wherever the army chooses to send him," the statement says. "His course finishes in 2012, and after that his deployment will be a matter for the army chain of command."
Upon completion of the course, Harry will be assigned to an Apache squadron and is said to be not only willing, but anxious to return to Afghanistan.
Harry spent 10 weeks fighting in Afghanistan in 2007 and 2008 as a second lieutenant in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry.
However, he was pulled out after some news outlets revealed details of his deployment, which was seen as a threat to him and his fellow troops.
Much as we enjoy rumors about Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton as much as the next site, it's nice to see him recognized for his service to the UK and for his very real - and very impressive - accomplishments.

Union-Supporting ?Zombie? Pukes Protest at Wisconsin Ceremony Honoring Special Olympics

Stay classy, scumbags.
In front of the Capitol today, protesters dressed as zombies stood between Governor Scott Walker and the group of Special Olympics participants he was honoring.
http://althouse.blogspot.com/2011/06/wisconsin-protesters-disrupt-special.html
What a bunch of self-centered, obnoxious assholes.? Their union pals show off their diversity skills?when showing up at Tea Party rallies, and now these union-supporting leftwingnut student morons made a point of disrupting a ceremony honoring Special Olympians, who overcome physical and mental handicaps to participate in athletics.?
Their tantrums are over budget cuts designed to make up for a $3.6 billion budget shortfall, and voter IDs, which will help eliminate voter fraud, and will make things difficult for the illegal aliens in the Dem voting bloc.
Note to the??zombie???brigade: Your antics are retarded.

Variety of Online Slot Machine Games | Online gamers home
Article by Riza
Slot machines represent a form of amusement that has entertained many people over the years. It is believed that the first slot machine was created in 1895 and since then, the slot has advanced with the times. In the mid 1990s, slots appeared at the best online casinos as an online type of entertainment. Following the success of the first online slot machine games, a variety of different kinds of slot games are today available via the Internet. Among the attractive alternatives, players may choose from 3 reel slots, 5 reel slot machine games, video slots and progressive slots. It should be noted that slot machines are games of chance. However hard one may search for a suitable strategy, it does not really have an effect on a slot. A random number generator (RNG) is used at online slot machines in order to produce a random element to the game and an honest and fair game for the player.
As is recommended for other casino games, it is worthwhile reading about the particular chosen slot machine game before playing. Descriptions and rules of the individual slot games may be found at the best online casinos sites.
Bonus Slots
A bonus slot is a fun type of slot machine game that offers a bonus round. This feature presents the player with the exciting opportunity of increasing winnings during the game. In this way a player may double, treble or multiply winnings at a particular game.
Progressive Slots
Progressive slot machines present an appealing way to play online slots. This type of game offers a progressive jackpot that is put forward at the same game that is featured at different casinos. Players quickly discover that a progressive jackpot is an attractive prize incentive.
Video Slots
A particularly popular type of pursuit among the choice of online games available is the video slot. These exist in various themes ranging from beach, cars, ski resort to fruit and love. The list is almost endless including different animals, countries and holidays.
Free Slots
Many people consider that free slots in themselves provide a great form of entertainment. Just as it sounds, a player can access and play slots online for no charge at all. Perhaps, it should be clarified, that for those playing in this way, real money winnings cannot be obtained. However, first of all, free slots are fun in their own right. In addition, playing slots in this way enables players, in particular newcomers, to adjust to the feeling and way of playing slots online. It also gives a player the chance to learn the workings of the slot game and different bonuses while playing for free. It is well recommended, as with any online casino game, to learn the rules and gain an understanding of the game, before placing money on the table, or on the chosen slot.
However each individual may choose to play the slots and whichever fun slot game is selected out of the wide variety available, the versatile slot machine has proved itself to be a winner both offline and online.

Suspected suicide bomb hits Nigerian police HQ (AFP)
ABUJA (AFP) ? A powerful bomb blew up inside the Nigerian police headquarters on Thursday, killing a suspected suicide bomber and wounding several bystanders, witnesses and officials said.
The blast tore into a police car park at the compound in the capital Abuja, throwing people to the ground and destroying several vehicles, they said.
If confirmed as a suicide blast, it would be the first such bombing in Nigeria as it faces a growing threat from Islamic militants, a security expert told AFP.
"The police force headquarters has been bombed, everywhere is bombed," deputy national police spokesman Yemi Ajayi told AFP by telephone soon after the explosion.
"A suspected suicide bomber died in the incident. Many vehicles were destroyed," emergency services spokesman Yushau Shuaib said.
An AFP correspondent saw a chunk of human flesh on the ground of car park where more than 20 cars were completely burnt.
At least five people were admitted to hospital for wounds and two had been treated at the scene and sent home, Red Cross aid workers said.
A man in an apartment opposite the compound said he saw from his balcony a few blood-stained people on the ground. He was unable to tell if they were dead or not.
There were several powerful blasts, he said on condition of anonymity.
"There was a loud bang, my whole house shook as if the roof was about to come down. Then there was another blast. I heard four blasts," he said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but it follows scores of others blamed on Islamic militants known as the Nigerian Taliban.
Another emergency services spokesman said the bomb was planted in a car in the parking lot.
Roads leading to the attack site were cordoned off at least a kilometre away as a thick plume of smoke rose from the area.
The police headquarters is situated less than a kilometre from the presidential offices and residence.
The explosion is the latest in a series of blasts to hit the capital since October last year.
The first was near the venue of Independence Day festivities on October 1 that killed 12 people.
On New Year's Eve blasts at a beer garden left several dead, and more were killed in a spate of bombings around the swearing into office of President Goodluck Jonathan outside Abuja about two weeks ago.
Thursday's bombing came a day after the Islamist Boko Haram sect threatened "fiercer" attacks and it would not enter into talks with the government, which it had earlier called for.
It said it was angered by a police declaration that "the days of Boko Haram are numbered".
"Very soon, we will wage jihad ...," the group said in a handwritten statement.
The sect admitted links with a foreign Islamist group connected to Al-Qaeda, although security experts had already speculated that it had established ties with Islamists in north Africa.
Also known as the Nigerian Taliban, the group launched an uprising in 2009 which was put down by a brutal military assault that left hundreds dead.
It has pushed for the creation of an Islamic state and been blamed for shootings of police and community leaders, bomb blasts and raids on churches, police stations and a prison.
Jonathan last week told reporters in New York that he would support attempts to talk to the Islamic militants in Nigeria's predominately Muslim north to end months of deadly unrest in this region of Africa's most populous country.

AP Source: Saxophonist Clemons suffers stroke (omg!)
NEW YORK - Saxophonist Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band has suffered a stroke.
A person who has worked with Clemons in the past confirmed Sunday night that Clemons had the stroke. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak on the matter. The person had no additional information on Clemons' condition.
Clemons, 69, is known as the Big Man in the E Street Band and his sax has been one of the most defining elements of the band's sound. He has suffered from numerous ailments over the last few years. He had double knee surgery and even had to perform from a wheelchair at one point.
But his health seemed to be improving. Just last month, he performed with Lady Gaga on the season finale of "American Idol."
Lady Gaga tweeted Monday morning that "my very close friend + musician on The Edge of Glory, Clarence Clemons is very sick. Can we all make some get well videos?"
Drummer and music industry executive Narada Michael Walden, whom Clemons has called a close friend and spiritual adviser, replied to an email query Monday about Clemons by responding, "Love and prayers to the Big Man! He is our Hero!"
Clemons' nephew, saxophonist Jake Clemons, updated his Facebook status on Monday to say: "Please do not lose Hope!"
