Baseball: Miners finish sweep of Slammers

Three games out of first place for the Joliet Slammers in early June grew to seven games out Friday. Now they have to keep ?out of first place? from becoming ?out of contention? in the Frontier League.

Schaumburg, Windy City, River City and Gateway are ahead of the Slammers in the Frontier League?s West Division, and only two division champs and two teams with the next-best records make the playoffs.

The Slammers failed to restart their climb in the standings with a storm-shortened 7-4 loss Friday night at Silver Cross Field that completed a three-game sweep by the Southern Illinois Miners.

The game was stopped because of lightning with one out in the top of the seventh before a wind-swept rainstorm moved in, blowing the tarp off the infield and scattering workers trying to re-cover the field.

The Slammers (17-22) fell to five games under .500 for the first time this season.

After facing just four batters in the first inning, Slammers starter Wander Alvino gave up five runs on five hits over the next two innings, the biggest hit a three-run, opposite-field home run by Jason Ganek, the Miners? No. 8 hitter.

Joliet rallied with two runs in the third and fourth innings to close the gap to 5-4, including RBI doubles by Hector Pellot and David Fox and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Maunus, but the Miners added two runs in the fifth off reliever Dustin Quattrocchi.

A play that epitomizes the season so far for the Slammers came in the bottom of the fifth with two runners on and Southern Illinois leading 7-4. Abel Nieves, the team?s best hitter and the potential tying run, was at the plate when Pellot, who had walked, was picked off first base to end the inning.

Both Nieves and manager Bart Zeller, who was coaching third base, didn?t move for a few seconds after the play, almost in disbelief at what happened.

Next for the Slammers are road games Saturday through Monday against the Rockford RiverHawks, followed by a six-game homestand before the July 9 to 12 All-Star break.

?We?re trying to set the tone for going into the All-Star break on a real positive note,?? Zeller said.

Statistically, the Slammers have compiled some good numbers in a few categories.

Nieves? .362 batting average led the team and ranked third in the league entering Friday. He also tops the Slammers in hits, total bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Defensively, Joliet?s .975 fielding percentage is among the league leaders, trailing only the Washington Wild Things.

On the mound, Amalio Diaz?s eight saves is tied for third in the league and opponents are hitting just .158 against him. Reliever Chase Doremus has the team?s lowest ERA, 1.54 over 231/3 innings.

Connecticut wrongly revokes couple's Medicaid benefits | Hartford ...

With growing life expectancy rates and strained government budgets, our Connecticut readers would be wise to prepare for what comes after retirement rather than trusting the social safety net.

Nowadays, people retire in their 50s and 60s, but often live into their 80s and 90s. To make sure their long-term care needs are in order, individuals and couples should evaluate their finances, protect their assets and put together a spending plan that will prevent them from depleting their assets during retirement.

Just ask a Connecticut couple who lost their Medicaid benefits recently because Connecticut did not process their routine eligibility review within a reasonable period. The couple sent in the review on time, but were told months later -- and without an opportunity to challenge the decision -- that they were no longer eligible for Medicaid benefits. Worse, their benefits had been canceled prior to their receipt of the rejection letter.

Worried about not being able to get medication for the husband's high blood pressure, the couple retained legal services, which resulted in the couple's reinstatement to the Connecticut Medicaid rolls. This sort of thing happens regularly; indeed, thousands may have received similar treatment, according to some estimates.

Why? Because of limited staff, the Department of Social Services routinely struggles to keep up with the required paperwork. In turn, the agency's computer system often interprets the backlog as meaning the status of people who were not timely renewed as terminated.

When Medicaid recipients try to challenge the improper revocation of benefits, it can be difficult to even get in touch with caseworkers due the number of cases they are assigned and messages they receive.

Everest Base Camp Trekking: What to Take

When heading out to Everest Base Camp trekking for the first time, the question on many hopeful trekkers? lips is: what do I take? There is a wealth of equipment available with so much choice that it may seem overwhelming to some. Packing sensibly is of the utmost importance, so read on for a guide to what?s essential.

Choose Wisely

When you book an Everest Base Camp trekking trip, your tour operator should be able to provide you with a comprehensive gear list, or recommendations for products and suppliers. Given the extremes of weather and altitude you will be facing, and the changeable nature of the conditions, a versatile set of gear is essential. When faced with the wide selection of options and prices available, it might be helpful to ask yourself: what would I be most grateful for, up on a frozen mountainside? Choose excellent quality walking boots that fit well, a good range of lightweight, mid-weight and insulated clothing ? and don?t forget waterproofs. Protecting your head from weather ? rain, snow, or sun ? is also vital. Again, a range of gear is best, so consider bandanas or scarves, balaclavas, wool hats and sunhats. Protect your eyes from the sun with a good pair of sunglasses ? and take a spare, just in case.

Think Ahead

What will you want to have with you when settling into your camp or tea house for the evening? Books, diaries and games can all come in handy. Are you a light sleeper? You might want to take earplugs, if so. Double-check your toiletries and first aid kits ? there?s limited shopping opportunities while Everest Base Camp trekking. Do you have enough memory cards, and spare batteries, for your camera? Remember you will need to keep batteries warm and dry to ensure they keep working. Other items that often come in useful while trekking and camping include a headtorch, small towel, spare carrier and ziplock bags, and the all-essential sunscreen.

Finally ? Pack Smartly

Packing for your Everest Base Camp trekking experience is more than simply a case of throwing in everything you might want. Yes, you want to be well-prepared for any eventuality, but as your bag will be carried by a yak or porter, you will have a weight limit for your kitbag. It is also helpful to think about what to keep in your own daypack at all times ? extra clothing, waterproofs, health and first aid essentials, water and water purification tablets, and snacks are all good ideas.

Vi Aventura, a continuing care retirement community helps build ...

A new report by gerontologist Ken Dychtwald PhD, challenges the popular myth that one?s current home is the best option to continue an active social life and stay connected during retirement years.

?The reality is that remaining in your home can result in growing isolation and loneliness in later life,? said Dychtwald, bestselling author of Age Wave. ?Senior living options, like a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), offer opportunities to create new friendships and social connections.?

Titled ?Five Myths and Realities of Continuing Care Retirement Communities,? Age Wave?s report and research were commissioned by Vi, a developer of older adult living communities, including Vi Aventura.

The Report stated, friendships and close social connections are an essential source of happiness, and people age 60 and over are most likely to cite ?living family and friends? as extremely important to their happiness ? more important than money or even health.

Yet, it is not uncommon for people who stay in their current home during retirement to find that their friends and family move away, and many can feel increasingly lonely or isolated in their current home. Studies show that having low social interaction is as bad for your health as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day, is as dangerous as being an alcoholic, is as harmful as never exercising and is twice as dangerous as obesity.

Residents of CCRCs like Vi Aventura say that it is the opportunity to meet, learn from, and engage in new activities with positive, stimulating, like-minded people that can make life brighter and fuller.

One interviewee said ?the no. 1 benefit is that you?re surrounded by successful, interesting people. You have a pretty good chance of finding people who may make an impact on your life.?

CCRCs like Vi Aventura offer independent living with a combination of a private residence, services, amenities and care. For more information contact Marjorie Aloni, Community Relations Manager at 305-692-4829.

Pakistan's Texas-sized problems

Despite the some cultural overlaps, the American and Pakistani paths are parting ways.

By Scott Baldauf,?Staff writer / June 28, 2012

A Pashtun boy stands at the window of his family's mud house, looking at children playing nearby on the outskirts of Peshawar, Pakistan, last week.

Years ago, before Sept. 11, when I first started traveling in South Asia, a Pakistani diplomat gave me a quick tutorial about how his people, Pashtuns, were not so very different from my own people, Texans.

We both follow conservative religions, although not so closely as we like others to believe, said the diplomat, delicately cutting into a plate of enchiladas at a Tex-Mex joint in Washington. Like Texans, we love our guns. We have very traditional beliefs about marriage and the role of women in society. We love barbecued meat. We distrust government, and hate paying taxes. We?re not as different as you might think.

As intriguing as this Pashtuns-are-Texans theory is, it is clear that the differences between the United States (which includes Texas, for the time being) and Pakistan (which includes many ethnic Pashtuns, for the time being) have become vast. US military airstrikes, aimed at Islamist militants but also killing civilians and even Pakistani soldiers, have turned many Pakistanis against what they see as a ?great Satan.? Pakistani tolerance of, and even support for, Islamist militant groups on Pakistani soil has pushed many US military commanders to conclude that Pakistan is, in effect, more an enemy than an ally. According to Christine Fair in this week?s Foreign Policy magazine, some are contemplating a new approach: either containment, or benign neglect.

At present, Pakistan no longer allows the US military or the NATO alliance to use its ports or roads to resupply NATO troops based in Afghanistan. And with US elections approaching, and Pakistan?s government increasingly fragile, it is hard to see how the two countries can bridge the gap.

Pakistani public opinion has turned sharply against the United States, with a recent Pew Research poll showing that 74 percent regard America to be an enemy, up from 69 percent in 2011, and 64 percent three years ago.

Recent headlines indicate that things are not getting better, but rather worse.

* In her?Foreign Policy piece, Ms. Fair suggests that US military are close to giving up on its tactical alliance with Pakistan. As Fair writes, Pakistan is in such a state of crisis, it couldn?t change course even if it wanted to do so.

Pakistan is in crisis. Its courts act on whim rather than jurisprudence. Its political parties are vast pools of corrupt patronage networks that aggregate elite interests while disregarding the interests of Pakistan's struggling masses. Neither elected politicians nor military rulers have had the political courage to right the nation's fiscal woes by enforcing income tax or imposing industrial and agricultural taxes on the ruling elites and their networks of influence. While the army has retrenched from a direct role in politics, it has done so likely because it has no other option: Pakistan's military suffered a mighty humiliation after the bin Laden raid, which left many citizens wondering whether their country is a failed state, a rogue state, or both.

(AP) ? As a junior senator, Barack Obama voted against John Roberts' nomination to the Supreme Court, fearing he would favor the powerful over the weak.

Now it is Roberts who has saved the signature achievement of Obama's presidency, the health care overhaul, in a ruling that challenges critics' assertions that the chief justice is nothing more than a conservative ideologue.

Roberts had pledged at his 2005 confirmation hearing to act as a judicial umpire, calling balls and strikes without taking sides. On Thursday, he threw conservatives a curveball.

In a 5-4 ruling upholding the health care law, Roberts wrote for the majority that it's not the court's job to decide whether Obama's plan "embodies sound policies. That judgment is entrusted to the nation's elected leaders."

After all the speculation that the Republican-leaning court would strike down the law, Roberts' opinion startled even Paul Clement, the lawyer who had made the case against the law in oral arguments before the high court in March.

"If you told people that there were four solid votes to strike down the whole thing, you know, I think most people ... would have been surprised to find that among the four were Justice (Anthony) Kennedy and not the chief justice," Clement said.

The 57-year-old chief justice hasn't gotten this much attention since he flubbed the oath of office that he administered to Obama on Inauguration Day in 2009. His mangled wording of the inaugural oath prompted a presidential do-over the next day.

Thursday's ruling induced an instant role reversal.

Liberals sang Roberts' praises. Conservatives suddenly were less enamored. Roberts had been their darling since President George W. Bush picked the federal judge to replace Chief Justice William Rehnquist.

For a second time in the court's final week of its term, Roberts had aligned himself with the liberal justices. In a decision Monday, he had voted to invalidate parts of Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Roberts "saved the day ? and perhaps the court," in the health care ruling, said Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe, a constitutional scholar who once hired Obama as a research assistant and also had the chief justice as a student.

Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman of California chimed in: "Today I am proud to be a member of the Harvard Law School class of 1979, the class that included Chief Justice Roberts."

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-NY, said Roberts had "acted as the umpire he promised to be."

Republican lawmakers largely focused on their dismay with the ruling, steering clear of its author, although Sen. David Vitter, R-La., accused Roberts of "amazingly rewriting the law in order to uphold it."

Other critics let loose.

A National Review Online editorial, under the title "Roberts's Folly," said the chief justice and his colleagues had "done violence" to the Constitution. Hackers briefly changed Roberts' title on Wikipedia to "Chief Traitor of the United States" and labeled him a "coward." T-shirts declaring "Impeach John Roberts" were soon on sale.

As Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney spoke out strongly against the ruling, his website lagged behind, still promising, "As president, Mitt will nominate judges in the mold of Chief Justice Roberts."

Once the shock at the ruling wore off, the questions about Roberts' motivations began.

Did he do it to salvage the court's image? Was he trying to preserve his legacy?

The court's reputation for impartiality took a major hit with the 5-4 ruling that awarded the presidency to Republican Bush over Democrat Al Gore in 2000. With the court's liberal and conservative justices often sharply divided in recent years, a CBS News-New York Times poll this month found that 76 percent of those surveyed thought the justices were at least sometimes influenced by their own political or personal opinions rather than the law.

The latest numbers from Gallup, which has tracked confidence in the court since 1973, are among the lowest the court has ever received.

William Galston, a former Clinton administration official, wrote that Roberts may have "had one eye focused on jurisprudence and another on the standing of the institution he heads."

But Richard Garnett, a University of Notre Dame law professor and former Supreme Court clerk to Rehnquist, rejected the idea that Roberts was out to please the public.

"Chief Justice Roberts is a guy who is trying hard to get the right answer even in hard cases that have political implications," Garnett said. Still, Garnett said the ruling might help to change public impressions, acknowledging that there was "a narrative that was being set up" painting the court in highly partisan terms.

Michael Dorf, a Cornell University law professor who clerked for Kennedy, said the ruling shouldn't be taken as evidence that Roberts has lost his conservative bent.

"There's no doubt that Roberts is a generally conservative justice," Dorf said. "What this case demonstrates is that he is not simply an ideologue and he was led where the arguments led him."

There was some speculation that Roberts had even thrown a bone to conservatives by going out of his way in the ruling to agree with their position that Congress lacked the power under the Constitution's commerce clause to put the mandate for health insurance in place.

In 2005, Obama, a former constitutional law professor, explained his vote against Roberts' confirmation by saying that the judge was qualified in temperament and scholarship for most of what comes before the high court, but not for those truly difficult cases where "the critical ingredient is supplied by what is in the judge's heart."

Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., predicted Roberts' stock with the president is a notch higher these days.

"I bet he gets an engraved Christmas card invitation to the White House," Cole said. "He's pretty popular right now, down there at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue."

PhotoBlog: Eviction leads to protest in Spain

Riot police try to arrest members of the "Stop Deshaucios," Stop Evictions, social movement during a protest to prevent an eviction in Oviedo, northern Spain on June 27, 2012.

Photos and text by Eloy Alonso / Reuters:

Protesters tried to prevent the eviction of an Ecuadorian family unable to maintain its mortgage payments in Oviedo, northern Spain. Jorge Cordero, his wife Patricia and five-month-old daughter Amanda were evicted because they could not keep up mortgage payments to the Cajastur bank. Seventeen people locked themselves in the apartment with the owner and around 200 people gathered outside to try and stop the eviction. Jorge's wife and baby daughter were not present in the apartment during the eviction. Twenty people were arrested. The plight of over one million Spanish people facing a crippling mortgage debt is increasingly attracting public support as an anti-eviction movement places pressure on politicians to act.

Vizio's Google TV box emerges as the Co-Star Stream Player, goes up for pre-order in July with OnLive gaming

Vizio Co-Star hands-on

Remember the Vizio VAP430 Stream Player that we tried during CES? Half a year later, the Google TV hub is getting full launch details, just in time for Google I/O. Along with receiving the much more elegant title of Co-Star Stream Player, the set-top box now bakes in OnLive streaming game support -- the Co-Star could, in theory, replace a game console for any American with a good broadband connection. Whether or not playing Just Cause 2 on a TV is in the cards, the hub ticks all the 2012 Google TV checkboxes, including a hybrid keyboard and remote, 3D-capable 1080p video and DLNA media sharing. Before you rush to the local big-box store to pick one up, be warned that pre-orders don't start until July, and then only on Vizio's website. The $100 price, however, will make it considerably easier to wait.

FDA clears first new weight-loss pill in 13 years

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration has approved Arena Pharmaceutical's anti-obesity pill Belviq, the first new prescription drug for long-term weight loss to enter the U.S. market in over a decade.

Despite only achieving modest weight loss in clinical studies, the drug appeared safe enough to win the FDA's endorsement, amid calls from doctors for new weight-loss treatments.

The agency cleared the pill Wednesday for adults who are obese or are overweight with at least one medical complication, such as diabetes or high cholesterol.

The FDA denied approval for Arena's drug in 2010 after scientists raised concerns about tumors that developed in animals studied with the drug. The company resubmitted the drug with additional data earlier this year, and the FDA said there was little risk of tumors in humans.

"The approval of this drug, used responsibly in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle, provides a treatment option for Americans who are obese or are overweight and have at least one weight-related comorbid condition," said FDA's drug center director, Dr. Janet Woodcock, in a statement.

With U.S. obesity rates nearing 35 percent of the adult population, many doctors have called on the FDA to approve new weight loss treatments.

But a long line of prescription weight loss offerings have been associated with safety problems, most notably the fen-phen combination, which was linked to heart valve damage in 1997. The cocktail of phentermine and fenfluramine was a popular weight loss combination prescribed by doctors, though it was never approved by FDA.

In a rare move, the FDA explicitly stated in a press release that Belviq "does not appear to activate" a chemical pathway that was linked to the heart problems seen with fen-phen.

The FDA said the drug acts on a different chemical pathway in the brain, which is believed to reduce appetite by boosting feelings of satiety and fullness.

Belviq is one of three experimental weight-loss drugs whose developers have been trying for a second time to win approval, after the FDA shot them all down in 2010 or early 2011 because of serious potential side effects.

Vivus Inc.'s Qnexa is thought to be the most promising of the drugs, achieving the most weight loss. But the FDA has delayed a decision on that pill until July.

Shares of San Diego-based Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. jumped $2.07, or 23.4 percent, to $10.92 in trading Wednesday afternoon. Shares of Mountain View, Calif.-based Vivus rose $1.61, or 6.1 percent, to $28.01

Arena's studies showed that patients taking Belviq, known generically as lorcaserin, had modest weight loss. On average patients lost just 3 to 3.7 percent of their starting body weight over a year. About 47 percent of patients without diabetes lost at least 5 percent of their weight or more, which was enough to meet FDA standards for effectiveness. By comparison, average weight loss with Qnexa is 11 percent, with more than 83 percent of patients losing 5 percent of their weight or more.

The FDA said patients should stop taking Belviq after three months if they fail to lose 5 percent of their body weight. Patients are unlikely to see any significant weight loss by staying with the drug.

Side effects with the drug include depression, migraine and memory lapses.

In May a panel of expert advisers to the FDA voted 18-4 to recommend approval of Arena's drug, concluding that its benefits "outweigh the potential risks when used long term" in overweight and obese people.

Experts say the challenge of weight loss drug development lies in safely turning off one of the body's fundamental directives: to eat enough food to maintain its current weight.

While several drugs are available for short-term weight loss, until Wednesday there was only one FDA-approved prescription drug for long-term weight loss: Xenical from Roche, which is seldom prescribed because of unpleasant digestive side effects and modest weight loss. Belviq is the first new prescription drug approved to treat obesity since Xenical's approval 13 years ago.

Other safety failures for diet pills have continued to pile up in recent years.

Four years ago Sanofi-Aventis SA discontinued studies of its highly anticipated pill Acomplia due to psychiatric side effects, including depression and suicidal thoughts. In 2010, Abbott Laboratories withdrew its drug Meridia after a study showed it increased heart attack and stroke.

Katy Perry Says She 'Did Everything' To Save Her Marriage

Perry's 'Part of Me' documentary gives fans a candid look at the demise of her relationship with Russell Brand.

It's been a whirlwind of a year for pop superstar Katy Perry. In 2011, she earned six #1 singles off her Teenage Dream album, embarked on a worldwide tour and endured a very public breakup from Russell Brand.

And now fans can share all these experiences and more as Perry is set to release her 3-D documentary, "Part of Me," on July 5th. The movie chronicles her unparalleled year as she has career highs, but suffers personal lows.

And it's those very personal moments, especially with Brand, that many will find most surprising. For the past six months, Perry has been mum on the issue of her divorce, and now for the first time, she is opening up about the split.

The film picks up just a few months after the two tied the knot, as Perry embarks on her biggest tour to date, the California Dreams Tour. Fans witness Perry put in hours of hard work preparing for the tour and traveling to hundreds of different cities. Yet, with the success that she was having onstage, it was offstage where things were falling apart.

It seems her new marriage and a grueling tour schedule were not mixing well, but it was not from lack of trying: Perry was adamant that while on her nearly yearlong tour, she take time out to see her husband, but in the end, it just couldn't save the marriage.

At one point, while flying to one of her tour stops, Perry admits to the camera, "I'm trying to keep my marriage alive."

"Part of Me" gives fans a rare glimpse inside a celebrity marriage, with Brand featured throughout the film. Some moments are touching, like when the comedian comes to wish her well on the opening night of her tour, yet some are heartbreaking to watch. In one scene, Perry is crying uncontrollably, delaying the start time of the concert, but like a true professional, she chokes back the tears and puts on a brave face for her fans.

Perry talks candidly about Brand in the film, revealing that it was her skyrocketing career that could have played into the downfall of her marriage. "I thought to myself, 'When I find that person that's going to be my life partner, I won't ever have to choose [between the partner and my career]. They won't be threatened or have weird motives.' Then I started to realize, that's not true," she admits. Yet, when asked in the film whether she still misses Brand, Perry begins to cry and admits that she does, but says she did everything she could to make it work.

"I have that same belief system with everything, from career to my life to my personal life, everything. And I will do everything it takes to not fail," she shares. "And I did everything it took, but it still failed."

Perry recently told MTV News that even though the subject of her divorce is difficult to deal with, she felt she would be doing her fans a disservice if she didn't include it in the film.

"The truth will always prevail," Perry said. "Everything has to be handled integrously and appropriately, and it's not nice to air all your dirty laundry, because that stinks, so I had to be very delicate with the situation, but I couldn't avoid the elephant in the room," she explained. "If you were to have seen that movie and walked out and [my breakup] wasn't at all mentioned, like it never happened, you'd be like, 'Eh, this is weird. What is she trying to hide?' I don't like to hide."
