brain metastasis refers to when the cancer has spread to the brain from elsewhere in the body, most commonly the lung or breast cancer.
Primary lung tumors represent 50% of all metastatic brain tumors. Lung cancer is the most common cause of metastatic disease. Patients with lung cancer who survive for more than 2 years, 80% have brain metastases.
The average interval between diagnosis of primary lung tumor and brain metastases is 4 months old. Fascinating, small cell carcinomas, which are only 20% of all lung cancers, representing 50% of brain metastases of cancer. In a retrospective study, 6.8% of cancer recurrence was the first in the brain.
Metastatic disease of the breast, kidney, thyroid and colon, more generally, can be found in a metastatic lesion in metastatic lung cancer and melanoma lesions are usually multiple. Testicular cancer is a rare tumor, and yet often metastasizes to the brain compared to lung cancer.
Lung cancer can also pass through the bloodstream to other parts of the body, most commonly the liver, adrenal glands, brain, spinal cord, or bones. The spread of cancer of the lung cancer can occur at the beginning of the course of disease, particularly small cell lung cancer.
People with metastatic brain tumors have several treatment options. Treatment depends crucially on where the cancer started.
