Seth MacFarlane is getting into the Flintstones business.
"One of the first things that I drew when I was 2 years old was Fred Flintstone," MacFarlane told a roomful of ad buyers gathered in New York on Monday for the Fox upfront presentation.
While there's much that will remain the same about the long-running cartoon, the creator of Family Guy and The Cleveland Show says some updates will be necessary: "What's the animal version of the iPod?" he said. "That's the kind of thing we have to think about."
Fox Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly said the series came together in the past couple of days and will begin production right away. The Flintstones will start production in the fall for a 2013 premiere on Fox.
"Fox has long been home to iconic families like the Simpsons and the Griffins, so I have no doubt that the Flintstones and the Rubbles are going to fit right in on our air," Reilly said.
The series will be jointly produced by 20th Television and Warner Bros. Television. Dan Palladino (Gillmore Girls) and Kara Vallo (Family Guy) will executive produce with MacFarlane.
This follows recent animated orders Allen Gregory and Napoleon Dynamite, which will roll out in the fall and midseason, respectively.?
