Roof Contractor ? How to Know You Can Trust Him

A roof contractor should be a person that you trust to come to your home, inspect your system and to help you to make a decision about what needs to be done. Most homeowners have very little hands on experience with roofing and roofing materials because it is commonly a situation where help is necessary only a few times every few years. Once you have a new system in place, you may not actually think about tackling it again until there is a problem. However, this lack of experience should not stop you from knowing how to hire a professional you can trust.

What to Look for in a Professional

There are many things to look for when hiring a professional roof contractor. While you do want to ensure he or she has a license to operate and insurance, bonding and all other necessary permits, you also want to know that this person has the hands on experience you need. The following are some things to look for to know that you can trust this person.

1. You ask for references and call those references. Ask, ?What was the worst part of this experience?? You will find out what was truly occurring on the job site.

2. You ask the professional to come to your home to give you a free consultation and inspection in the likelihood that you need to fix or redo the system. If he recommends that the entire system be replaced, right down to the boards, ask them to show you why this is needed. Climb up there and look. Most are not counting on you doing that.

3. Ask to see the invoice for materials. You should expect to pay for the labor and you will pay significantly for it. However, some roof contractors who are less than worthy of your investment will up charge you on the actual materials, telling you they are more expensive than they are. If the costs for the materials are more than you can pay at your home improvement store, this person may not be being honest with you.

4. Ask to pay for materials in advance and labor at the completion of the professional. A good roof contractor knows that this is a risk for you to trust him. However, it is a good idea to make staggered payments rather than to make payments all at one time.

5. Be sure you review the web to find any information about the provider. You can contact the Better Business Bureau and do a search for the company name and the owner?s name to find out what others really experienced with these professionals.

By doing these things, you improve the likelihood that you will accomplish the job of replacing or repairing your roofing system without having to hire the wrong person to do it. A roof contractor should be someone you trust because they are installing one of the most important systems on your home and they need to do so properly.
