Airtel Ghana, in partnership with Ericsson, is supporting the Accra Metropolitan Assembly?s (AMA) fifty (50) Accra Millennium City schools project with the provision of broadband internet connectivity at subsidized rates.
One of the 50 schools, a new 3-storey complex building was commissioned on Wednesday 18th July 2012 at the Salvation Army Cluster of Schools at Mamprobi in Accra by H.E. the President, John Evans Atta Mills.
As a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Airtel Ghana and Ericsson collaborated in 2009 to build five (5) cell sites and provide voice and data services for the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) in the Bonsaaso cluster of villages located in the Amansie West district. Free phone, routers, SIM cards and airtime were also provided to health workers, teachers, schools and staff of the MVP office in the cluster. This project has since greatly improved the lives of the over 30,000 people living in the cluster. Health workers, farmers, pupils and the communities have seen a leap and drastic transformation in their lives as well with the entire cell sites been heavily utilized.
Head of Corporate Communications and External Affairs at Airtel Ghana, Donald Gwira explained that for the AMA Schools projects, Airtel Ghana is providing fifty (50) data SIM cards and 5 GB internet connectivity at a 50% subsidized rate. He added that Airtel Ghana will also provide the 50 schools with free internet connectivity in the first month of implementation and also support the schools with repair and replacement of equipment provided by the initiative including Broadband Fixed Wireless Terminal equipment. Mr. Gwira also explained that as part of the monitoring and evaluation of the project, Airtel Ghana will provide data to Ericsson for analysis on the usage of the Broadband Internet Service by the Schools whiles supporting with the establishment of ?School to School Connection Programs? at all schools.
Mr. Gwira added that ?one of our key pillars for CSR is education so we thought it worthwhile to support this initiative by the AMA who is building the 50 new ultra modern schools in the Greater Accra region which are to be fully ICT enabled?. He said ?with the growth of ICT in the world and Airtel?s desire to see an ICT-embracing society, we are happy to be contributing our quota alongside partners such as? Ericsson and the AMA ; what we hope to see is that our contribution benefits the children and by extension the Ghanaian society,? Mr. Gwira said. All these schools will have a computer laboratory for the use of students and teachers.
Lars Lind?n, Head of Ericsson sub-Saharan Africa, said ?This collaboration is proof of Ericsson?s vision of a Networked Society where ICT is used to interact, innovate, share knowledge and empower people in a whole new way. Learning is one of the best scenarios of broadband being a technology for good, because the impact is so great when delivered in a public-private sector partnership.?
Ericsson?s contribution to the partnership includes access for all the 50 schools to Ericsson?s cloud based e-learning educational suite part of the Connect To Learn Initiative, collaborative effort between Ericsson, the Earth Institute at Columbia University and Millennium Promise, furnishing of each of the 50 schools, with Ericsson 3G Broadband Fixed Wireless Terminals and the provision of a minimum of 150 Connect to Learn netbooks. Ericsson would additionally support the establishment of ?School to School Connection Programs? where each of the 50 schools will be partnered with an international school to foster internationalization, and learn more about the world around them
