Toshiba launches Canvio Personal Cloud, network-attached storage with iOS and Android apps

DNP Toshiba launches Canvio Personal Cloud, networkattached storage with iOS and Android apps

It's been a few years now that Toshiba's been making external hard drives, so it makes sense that the company would want to venture into larger disks as a next step. Indeed, the company just took the wraps off Canvio Personal Cloud, its first network-attached storage product. The drive itself will be offered in two flavors -- 2TB and 3TB -- but the hook, of course, is that you can use various apps to upload your files and then access them remotely. These applications include desktop software, as well as mobile apps for iOS and Android. In either case, the applications are designed to upload music, video, photos and documents, and all of this content is searchable by date and other filters. The drive will be available sometime next month, starting at $220 for the 2TB version and going up to $250 for 3TB. If you're curious, we've got hands-on photos of the UI past the break.

Inmates hacked prison's record system

3 hrs.

In a major security breach that caught the attention of the FBI, New Hampshire inmates gained entry to the Corrections Information System (CORIS) and may have had access to personal information and the ability to amend sentencing, parole and release dates.

That's according to Mark Jordan, a former union president for prison guards in his area who also told The Union Leader that inmates using the computers are minimally supervised by just one guard and a civilian.

According to the Associated Press, the breach was discovered last week (Aug. 24) when a prison staffer saw a cable connecting an inmate computer to that of a staff member's. Inmates are not allowed to use computers at this time, and it's unclear exactly when inmates accessed CORIS.

Why inmates had anything close to access to a staff terminal is anyone's guess. Prison spokesman Jeffrey Lyons told the AP that the computers are used by about 24 inmates on a closed network for tracking and billing work done in prison. The New Hampshire Department of Corrections did not respond to SND questions at the time of this writing.

It's still unclear whether any records were stolen or tampered with.

The system, which "connects relevant stakeholders through a single electronic offender record and centralized database" and allows officers to make "more informed decisions related to treatment and security," was installed in 2008.

When asked why it took so long to announce the security breach Lyons said, "We were trying to determine how deeply this went before we put out any information."

Sofia Vergara not planning wedding

Sofia Vergara is too busy to plan her wedding.

The 40-year-old actress has confirmed recent speculation that she and partner Nick Loeb got engaged on a recent holiday to celebrate her birthday but she insists she is in no hurry to wed as she is tied up with her commitments to 'Modern Family'.

She told Celebuzz: ''I haven't started planning anything because everything has been very recent.

''I am kind of, you know, working a lot - I just started the 'Modern Family' season - so I don't know yet [when I will get married]. No plans.''

Sofia and Nick, 36, were joined by around 90 friends - including 'Modern Family' stars Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sarah Hyland - for the birthday trip to the Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza, Mexico, and the brunette beauty had a wonderful time.

She said: ''It was amazing!''

Sofia - who has 20-year-old son Manolo with first husband Joe Gonzalez - also admitted she is thinking of starting a family with Nick.

The actress - whose 'Modern family' character Gloria is pregnant - said: ''It's something that maybe one day I'll do again. I wouldn't mind...

''I mean, I think I can still do it. But you know, when you want to do something like that, you want to do it right, at the right moment, so I am taking it easy, so maybe when I have a little less work.''

Samsung reveals new Galaxy Note II

(AP) ? Fresh off a legal battle with Apple, Samsung is announcing a new version of the Galaxy Note, an offbeat, oversized smartphone that's become a surprise hit.

Samsung, the world's largest maker of phones, is revealing the Galaxy Note II at a trade show in Berlin. The 5.5-inch screen is narrower but longer than on the first version. The processor is faster, and the software has been further adapted for the included stylus ? the phone's signature feature.

While Apple has been releasing a new smartphone model each year, Samsung makes several to target different types of customers. That includes low-end phones for price-conscious customers. As a result, Samsung has been selling more smartphones than Apple this year.

The Note runs on Google's Android operating system but isn't among the phones that Apple is asking a judge to ban from the U.S., after a jury in California ruled last week that some of Samsung's Android phones violated Apple patents. The jury awarded Apple $1 billion in damages in a high-profile case that could force Samsung and other Android phone makers to rethink their designs.

The Note is designed to work well with a stylus for jotting notes and drawing on a screen, while styluses for other devices tend to be an afterthought. The Note's large screen also makes the phone more like a tablet and more suitable for playing games and consuming content. Samsung started selling a tablet version of the Note this month.

Samsung Electronics Co. says it has shipped 10 million first-generation Galaxy Note smartphone in one year.

Samsung says the new phone will go on sale in Europe and Asia in October. It did not say when it would launch with a U.S. carrier.

Three ISAF troops killed in Afghan 'insider attack': official

Three troops in the NATO-led force in Afghanistan have been killed in an attack by a member of the Afghan security forces, officials said Wednesday, in the latest "insider attack" that has caused growing dismay among coalition commanders.

The assault occurred in the evening hours in southern Uruzgan province and the nationality of the troops killed has not been announced, said a US defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The casualties were not American forces, the official added.

About 1,500 Australian troops are deployed in the province as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

"An individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force service members in southern Afghanistan yesterday, killing three," ISAF said in a statement.

"The incident is currently under investigation."

NATO has struggled to counter the so-called "green-on-blue" attacks in which uniformed Afghans turn their weapons against their international allies.

The assaults have spiked this year, with more than 30 attacks claiming the lives of 45 coalition troops, comprising about 14 percent of the overall death toll in the war for 2012, according to ISAF.

The assaults have troubled the international force, which has portrayed its partnership with Afghan troops as the key to a planned withdrawal of foreign combat troops over the next two years.

The commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, US General John Allen, said last week the causes of the surge in insider attacks are varied, and that Taliban infiltration only accounts for about a quarter of the incidents.

The general told reporters that the recent spate of assaults may have been related to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as he said Afghan soldiers were under strain from fasting in intense heat while engaged in combat.

A Pentagon assessment last year found serious tensions between the coalition forces and their Afghan counterparts, with relations plagued by cultural clashes and deep mistrust.

Two removed from Republican convention for tossing nuts at black camerawoman

TAMPA (Reuters) - Two people were ejected from the Republican National Convention for throwing nuts at an African-American camera operator for CNN and telling her: "This is how we feed animals," the cable network said.

The incident happened on Tuesday in the Tampa Bay Times Forum where delegates officially nominated Mitt Romney as the Republican candidate to face President Barack Obama in the November 6 election.

"Two attendees tonight exhibited deplorable behavior. Their conduct was inexcusable and unacceptable. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated," CNN quoted the convention as saying in a statement.

Multiple witnesses saw the incident and RNC security and police immediately removed the two people from the forum, CNN said.

Death toll from S. Korea typhoon rises to 18

South Korean rescuers Wednesday recovered two more bodies near two wrecked Chinese fishing boats, bringing the confirmed death toll from a powerful typhoon to 18.

Typhoon Bolaven -- the strongest to hit the South for almost a decade -- left a trail of death and damage in southwestern and south-central regions of the country.

It drove two Chinese fishing ships aground early Tuesday off the southern island of Jeju, sparking a dramatic rescue operation.

Coastguards wearing wetsuits struggled through high waves and pulled a total of 12 people to safety, and six swam ashore. Eight bodies had been recovered as of Wednesday and seven were still missing, the coastguard in Jeju said.

Dozens of divers are involved in the ongoing search. The coastguard said in a statement it would make "utmost efforts" to account for all the missing.

Most of the other deaths, confirmed by the public administration ministry, were caused by wind gusts that toppled walls or roofs or blew victims off their feet.

Typhoon alerts covering most of the country were lifted as ferries and flights returned to normal and schools reopened. But South Korea is now on watch for another typhoon, Tembin.

Bolaven moved on to North Korea, damaging crops and toppling some 3,700 roadside trees, the North's official news agency said. Human casualties were not reported.

In North Hwanghae Province, the typhoon deactivated television relay facilities and destroyed or damaged some 20 houses and public buildings, the agency said, adding that "a lot of houses and roads" were submerged in other provinces.

Bolaven crossed the Yalu border river into China early Wednesday.

In South Korea, the typhoon was the strongest since 2003 in terms of wind speed. A maximum speed of 214 kilometres per hour (134 miles per hour) was recorded at Mount Mudeung in the southwestern city of Gwangju.

Power cuts of five minutes or longer hit nearly two million homes, a record in the country, the public administration ministry said.

The storm toppled nearly 8,000 trees and damaged 42 ships or boats and 35 houses. A total of 6,418 hectares (15,852 acres) of farmland was damaged.

Typhoon Tembin, located about 350 kilometres northeast of the Taiwanese capital Taipei early Wednesday, is approaching South Korea at a speed of 20 kilometres an hour.

What Three Sisters Passed Down to Two Cousins

Three sisters, right around the turn of the 20th century, grew up in Texas, married three handsome men, and between them, produced one son and three daughters.? Mary Dee's two daughters each had a daughter and a son.? Mildred's daughter, Margaret, became my mother, who will probably scold me for calling her "Margaret," which she hasn't used since high school.? Lucy Sue's daughter, Lucille, had two daughters and a son.? Lucille's son, John, had a daughter and a son.?? John's daughter is my third cousin once removed, if I have that right.

When Lucy Sue, Mildred, and Mary Dee wanted to gather the family together, they did so at the Stagecoach Inn in Salado, Texas.? A shop nearby, located up a flight of stairs, had a sign pointing the way that read, "Antiques."? The three sisters found it hilarious, each and every time we met, to pose in birth order on the steps with the "Antiques" sign.? Their children probably exchanged "do you believe this" looks; we kids were simply relieved to the out of the glare of the flashbulbs. (Ah! Remember flashbulbs?)

During a couple of summers when I was young,? John and his wife, Jan, invited my sister, Janet, and me to stay with them for a week.? I remember having a great time with them, once getting to hang out at the store where John worked.? I had a book and found a quiet corner where I could read and keep an eye on the action.? I doubt that Janet did that.? She was the action, I feel sure.

Looking back on it, I am so thankful that we spent weeks with cousins or with my aunt and uncle on my dad's side of the family.? Those weeks afforded us opportunities to store up valuable family memories, as did holidays in small Texas towns like Lampasas, Sour Lake, or out at the family farm in Pearsall.

In time, though, with generations growing up and moving to various parts of the state, country, or world, our family, like many others, began to lose touch.? I hadn't seen my third cousins once removed in many years.? I sat down one day and logged onto Facebook, only to find a message from one of those very cousins.? Her husband, she said, worked at Baylor and had submitted the account of our family to the Alumni Association.? They had chosen us as a First Family of Baylor, said my cousin, and she hoped to see me at the award ceremony.

Reconnecting with my cousin opened up a new friendship for us.? Despite our age difference, Ladybug is only about a year older than her daughter.? We managed to set up a meeting or two while I lived in Perfect Austin, and I enjoyed our time together.

After one of those meetings, a lunch at a tea room in Waco, I wrote this in my gratitude journal: "Being able to see someone's family tree in their face - familiar features from generations before."? I saw her father's smile,? her grandfather's eyes, mannerisms I remember seeing her great-grandmother use.? We laughed about memorable ancestors, shared different perspectives on family life in the years since we'd seen each other as children.

Rediscovering Brooke, the Intentional Momma, my cousin, has often made me smile.

Later, of course, I came to know that Brooke is more than just my cousin.? Her blog creatively approaches motherhood with fun and frugality.? Her helpful tips and coupons help me run my home better and with far more craftiness than I am normally capable of.? Her upbeat attitude reminds me to seek the best in all I do around the house.? She is more than a cousin, she's a friend and a virtual mentor as I've entered BlogWorld.

I think of Lucy Sue, Mary Dee, and Mildred on the steps of that antique shop in Salado, giggling as sisters will about the idea of them being antiques.? None of us had any idea then about the ways families would lose touch, then reconnect.? Certainly home computers had never crossed their minds as their daughters snapped their picture.? The Internet would have sounded like something farfetched and ridiculous.? And blogs?? Why on earth would you want to write, on a regular basis, news about yourself and your family for strangers to read?

But cousins, laughing together in a tea room in Waco, Texas, seeing flickers of past generations steal across our faces?? Well, I do declare they'd have seen that coming for miles away. Jenn LeBow is a native Texan; lover of Jesus; happy wife of Honey, a Diplomatic Security Special Agent; mom of four (mostly) delightful kids: Cartwheel, 21; Einstein, 10; Blossom, 8; and Ladybug, 4; and voracious reader, whose appetite for books is reluctantly subjugated to other duties in life.? She blogs at Hang On, Baby, We're Almost... Somewhere, where she encourages a "small-town, big-world feel," and she tweets.??

Bj?rn Hurri (update) - Lines and Colors

Bjorn Hurri
Bj?rn Hurri is a concept artist working in the gaming industry, He has worked for companies like NCsoft, Catalyst Game Labs and SEGA and is currently the Lead Artist for Opus Artz, a production design agency based in London.

When I wrote about his work back in 2008, I highlighted his fun and, at the time, lightly sketched illustrations for steam punk versions of characters from Star Wars.

Since then, Hurri has expanded the project into a longer series of more finished illustrations (image above, top), with more elaborate interpretations of the characters.

His other work for gaming projects ranges from historical through science fiction subjects, and frequently displays Hurri?s skill at conveying texture and atmosphere.

I particularly enjoy his playful take on John Bauer?s wonderful big-nosed trolls (above, bottom).

Though his website is currently unavailable, you can find a portfolio of his work, along with some relevant information about the artist, on CGHub.

Hurri is also a contributor to the Gorilla Artfare group blog.

Father of Wanderlei Silva killed in car crash

Sad news from Curitiba, Brazil. Holando Piniero da Silva, the father of MMA veteran and all-around good guy Wanderlei Silva, died in a head-on car collision. Silva left his camp in Las Vegas to head to Brazil for his father's funeral services.

Silva recently released video from a visit with his family in Brazil. His father talked about how his son is the pride of Brazil, and beamed as he introduced his entire family to the camera.

"I learned a lot from my dad, even with our hectic life. My father worked three jobs. My parents lived for us," Wanderlei said. "The biggest lesson is that we can achieve anything through hard work and honesty."

Tablet computer sales will overtake notebooks by 2016 - People

by Dean Takahashi, Venture Beat

Sleek, fast and slim notebook computers are coming as early as this fall. But that might be the last hurrah of the laptop, as tablet computers are expected to overtake sales of notebook computers by the end of 2016. That?s the forecast for the changing computing landscape, according to Richard Shim, senior analyst for mobile devices at DisplaySearch. The change reflects a shift in consumer preferences, Shim said at the Emerging Display Technologies conference on Tuesday in Santa Clara, Calif. Tablets have screen sizes ranging from 5 inches to 10 inches, while notebook computers range from 10 inches to 17 inches. Tablets are focused on convenience, while notebooks are built for performance. Tablets are selling strong in mature markets like the U.S., while notebooks are selling better in emerging markets. That?s because notebooks are often the only computing devices in a household and they have to be used for high-performance tasks and productivity apps.

Federal court: Discrimination in Texas voting maps

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? The future of Texas' voting districts is again in question after a federal court Tuesday found evidence of discrimination in new district maps approved by the state's Republican-controlled Legislature last year.

The U.S. District Court in Washington wrote in a 154-page opinion that the maps don't comply with the federal Voting Rights Act because state prosecutors failed to prove that Texas lawmakers did not draw the new congressional and state Senate districts "without discriminatory purposes."

The ruling applies to the maps originally drawn by the Legislature in 2011, and not interim maps drawn by a San Antonio federal court that are to be used in the upcoming elections this November. The Washington court's Tuesday decision is most likely to impact the maps that will be used in the next election cycle in 2014.

Luis Vera, an attorney for the League of United Latin American Citizens, called the ruling "better late than never" and a win for his and other minority rights groups that sued the state over the maps.

"The three-judge panel unanimously found intentional discrimination across the state. There's no ifs, ands, or buts about it," Vera said.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott immediately vowed to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Today's decision extends the Voting Rights Act beyond the limits intended by Congress and beyond the boundaries imposed by the Constitution," Abbott said in a statement.

How Texas redrew its political boundaries was closely watched after the state was awarded four additional U.S. House seats based on a booming population largely driven by minorities. Those congressional seats were carved equally into two safely Republican and two safely Democratic districts.

The ruling is the latest in a process that started in June 2011, when the Texas Legislature passed new political maps but failed to get them "pre-cleared" by the Justice department. That's required under the federal Voting Rights Act which calls for Texas and eight other, predominantly southern, states with a history of racial bias to submit their political maps to the Justice Department for compliance.

But rather than submit the maps to the department, the state chose to seek preclearance through the Washington court.

Nina Perales, attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, said Tuesday's ruling seems to show the state's strategy backfired. MALDEF also was one of the groups that sued the state.

"It seems that Texas risked and lost more by going to the D.C. court than by going to DOJ," Perales said. "Particularly when you factor in the enormous expense of litigating a redistricting case."

The ruling comes months after lawyers for the state of Texas, the Justice Department and minority groups argued their sides in front of a three-judge panel in Washington. The two-week trial included dozens of witnesses as well as thousands of pages of documents on the redistricting process.

Texas' argument boiled down to politics: The state's lawyers said the map crafted by the Legislature reflected a GOP majority seeking to squeeze a partisan advantage out of the once-a-decade redistricting process, not a willful disregard for the Voting Rights Act. The state also maintained that lawmakers kept a cool distance from the process, leaving much of the work of drawing districts to legislative staff.

Through the trial, the three-judge panel appeared skeptical of Texas' arguments. The presiding judge, Rosemary Collyer, at one point told Texas' lawyers flatly, "It's really hard to explain (changes to the map) other than doing it on the basis of reducing minority votes."

Oil prices drop after G7 call for more production

Global oil prices eased Wednesday after a call by the Group of Seven nations for oil producers to increase output and the US Federal Reserve released a report showing US economic growth dull but not dire.

New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery, retreated 84 cents to $95.49 a barrel.

In London deals, Brent North Sea crude for October shed four cents to $112.54 a barrel.

While much of the energy infrastructure on the US Gulf of Mexico was shut down for Hurricane Isaac, the market saw the storm as having little impact on the supply and demand situation going forward.

"Oil prices have... retreated as damage from Isaac appears insignificant, and production is expected to resume quickly," added GFT analyst David Morrison.

About 95 percent of Gulf of Mexico production, or 1.31 million barrels a day, had been shut in before Isaac strengthened to a hurricane late on Tuesday.

By Wednesday afternoon the storm had passed into the mainland and was downgraded to a tropical storm.

"It is now believed that the overall damage will be lower than expected, and largely limited to flooding effects onshore," said PVM Associates analyst Tamas Varga.

Markets also reacted minimally to the G7 call, pushed mainly by the United States.

Finance ministers said in a statement issued Tuesday that oil producers needed to increase output, saying that higher prices posed "substantial risks" to the global economy.

With growth weakening in key economies and tensions over Iran worrying major oil importers, the G7 finance ministers also hinted they were ready to push for the release of strategic oil reserves to prevent a tightening of the market.

"We stand ready to call upon the International Energy Agency to take appropriate action to ensure that the market is fully and timely supplied," the statement said.

Meanwhile the Federal Reserve released its periodic Beige Book report on regional economies that slightly downgraded the assessment from July's edition. The economy has been growing "gradually" during the past two months "across most regions and sectors" -- taken as a slightly bearish signal by analysts and markets.

HomeFries | Planning a Family Get-Together

It?s almost Labor Day weekend.? I?m having 15 people spend two nights at my house. What are you up to?

The key to me not freaking out about this is to stay organized. Frankly, I love entertaining because I love the planning aspect of it. Any excuse to make a TO-DO list is just fine with me.

So this is how I?m staying organized. I have several lists going on right now.

First list to kick it off is the WHO THE HECK WILL BE THERE, list?

I kinda map out what meals we?re going to be having. This is my first list.

Then I map out the days on other piece of paper and put down the different meals we?ll be having.

Later on I fill in the blanks after I?ve done some brainstorming.

When I?m brainstorming the food, I print out recipes and figure out what needs to be bought at the store.

Since we are having a huge family get together, I gotta make a Costco list but there are some things at regular stores I need too!

There?s much more to add, this is just a start.

I like to write down the food I?m making on my list. It helps me not forget what I have to do!

And then I like to break it down to what I need to do on each day in the kitchen/shopping wise:

Lastly, there?s stuff TO DO AROUND THE HOUSE.

I make a huge list & then the husband and I divide & conquer.

Now a mass email goes out to all my sister-in-laws about food & sleeping arrangements and hopefully they?ll email me back and fill in the blanks. In a perfect world, they would all respond back to the email, but in reality I get a few emails, text messages, and messages through husbands of what is going on. And we all know how accurate a husband?s message is. Ha!

Wish me luck!

Trick to name the edges of a "phylo" object (for reference)

In my response to a recent R-sig-phylo message, I posted a trick for assigning the "names" attribute of the vector of edge lengths in a "phylo" object in R such that the name of each edge is given by the formula "parent node #,daughter node #" or, if the daughter node is a tip, then "parent node #,daughter tip label". I'll repeat this hear for the future reference of me & the readers of this blog (if there are any left by the end of this entry):

> library(ape)
> set.seed(100)
> tree > X > # replace all node numbers for tips with their labels
> X[X[,2]%in%1:length(tree$tip),2] tree$tip[X[X[,2]%in%1:length(tree$tip),2]]
> # substitute the names of tree$edge.length for the rows of X
> names(tree$edge.length) > round(tree$edge.length,2)
11,12??12,t9??12,13??13,t4??13,t5??11,14??14,15??15,t2??15,16
??0.20?? 0.36?? 0.36?? 0.69?? 0.54?? 0.71?? 0.54?? 0.75?? 0.42
16,t10??16,17??17,t8??17,t7??14,18??18,t6??18,19??19,t3??19,t1
??0.17?? 0.77?? 0.88?? 0.55?? 0.28?? 0.49?? 0.93?? 0.35?? 0.95
> plot(tree,no.margin=T)
> edgelabels(round(tree$edge.length,2))
> nodelabels()

(We can see that the branch lengths of the tree, plotted as edge labels, line up exactly with the branch names in tree$edge.length. Cool.)

That's it.

Apple lists 8 Samsung products it wants banned

21 hrs.

Apple Inc. on Monday submitted a list of eight Samsung Electronics Co. products it wants pulled from shelves and banned from the U.S. market.

Apple submitted the list after a jury found Samsung copied the iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing the products.

The products are: Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.

A judge will decide the issue later.

Apple claimed in a sweeping lawsuit that Samsung's smartphones and computer tablets "slavishly copied" the iPhones and iPads. Samsung countered with its own claims that Apple used its wireless technology without proper compensation.

A nine-person jury in its verdict last week unanimously agreed with Apple and ordered Samsung to pay $1 billion. Most of the damages were tied to Samsung's smartphones. It rejected Samsung's counterclaims.

The award represents about 1.5 percent of Samsung's annual revenue. Analysts said the embarrassment of the verdict is a bigger blow for Samsung than the financial setback.

Still, the question remains whether Samsung and other Apple competitors will have to redesign their smartphones to avoid infringing Apple's patents. Most analysts agree the verdict sends a threatening message to device makers like Samsung who use Google's Android operating system.

Noise of Summer: How 1990s summer jams made us dumberer

Summer jams: In the days before earbuds, they were the anthems you knew by heart from just walking around town. And they were catchy and smart. But something happened in the 1990s: Summer jams started getting so subnormal, so tweaked to appeal to below-average intellect, that they'd rightly earn their place as sports anthems or become culturally appropriated by Disney. Charting the 1990s musically, you get the sense of the national brain being gradually deprived of oxygen, going from thoughtful and experimental to 100-percent fool. Want proof? Here's the summer jam timeline...

Diets That Divide Us

Once upon a time, people didn?t really think too much about what they ate, as long as there was food on the table. Things are different today.

Targeted oxidation-blocker prevents secondary damage after traumatic brain injury

Monday, August 27, 2012

Treatment with an agent that blocks the oxidation of an important component of the mitochondrial membrane prevented the secondary damage of severe traumatic brain injury and preserved function that would otherwise have been impaired, according to a research team from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Graduate School of Public Health and Department of Chemistry in a report published online today in Nature Neuroscience.

Annually, an estimated 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to traffic accidents, falls, assaults and sports participation, said the study's senior author H?lya Bay?r, M.D., associate professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She added that 52,000 of those injured die, and 85,000 are left with significant disability.

"We don't yet have a specific therapy for TBI, but can provide only supportive care to try to ease symptoms," Dr. Bay?r said. "Our study drug shows promise as a neuroprotective agent that might help address this important public health problem."

For the study, the research team conducted a global assessment of all the phospholipids in rat brain cells. This revealed that damage from TBI was nonrandom and mostly involved cardiolipin, a phospholipid that is found in the membranes that form mitochondria, the cell's powerhouse. They noted that in the healthy animal, only 10 of the 190 cardiolipin species were modified by oxygen, but after a brain injury, the number of oxidized species rose many-fold.

The researchers then developed an agent, called XJB-5-131, which can cross the blood-brain barrier and prevent the oxidation of cardiolipin. Using an established research model of severe TBI, the agent or a placebo was injected into the bloodstream of rats five minutes and again 24 hours after head injury.

In the weeks that followed, treated animals performed akin to normal on tests of balance, agility and motor coordination, learning, and object recognition, while placebo-treated animals showed significant impairment. The results indicate that blocking cardiolipin oxidation by XJB-5-131 protected the brain from cell death.

"The primary head injury might not be that serious," Dr. Bay?r noted. "But that initial injury can set into motion secondary cellular and molecular events that cause more damage to the brain and that ultimately determine the outcome for the patient."

She added that a targeted oxidation-blocker might also be beneficial in the treatment of other neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, and stroke.

(AP) ? Syria's state news agency says a booby-trapped car has exploded in a Damascus suburb, killing a number of civilians.

SANA says Tuesday's blast in Jaramana targeted a funeral procession for two people who were killed a day earlier in the area.

It says it is the third bombing in Jaramana in the past 24 hours.

SANA says that an explosive device detonated in a car in Jaramana on Monday killed its driver. It says the device was attached to the car by an armed "terrorist" group.

Another car blew up in the area overnight, also killing the driver.

No further details were immediately available. It was not clear whether the targeted funeral procession Tuesday was for those killed in the earlier blasts.

Tony's Musings: Astronomy and Science Fiction: Part 2 - Venus

The "Nebular Hypothosis" was a theory proposed for the formation of the solar system. It was first proposed in a very simple form by Kant in 1755, but the more mature development came with Laplace in 1796.

What this did was to provide a model for the formation of the solar system that explained how

(1) the planets contain most of the angular momentum in the Solar System
(2)? all the planets are in roughly the same plane, which is the same plane
as the Sun's equator
(3) most planets rotate in the same direction

With this model, the solar system forms from a hot rotating nebular of dust? and gas. As the rotating gas cools, the nebular decreases in size, but as it contracts, there is a corresponding increase in rotational speed. This would? throw out a rotating ring of gas and dust, which would be rather like the ring around Saturn, but composed of dust and gases. Gravitational forces would lead this ring to would contract along its orbit into a planet, and this would repeat, as the central nebula's speed led to further expelling of matter, causing the formation of the planets. So the gravitational collapse of the nebular gives rise to the sun and planets, and in particular, the further out a planet, the older it is, the closer to the sun, the younger.

But for the purposes of science fiction, we need to remember that Laplace's hypothesis dominated the 19th century and left a lasting legacy in the 20th century.

If we take the case of Venus, Venus is seen as a cloud covered planet, and watery and humid, often with jungle where there is a modicum land, but with a great deal of water, and very little land.

In Robert Heinlein's "Between Planets", Venus is portrayed as a world covered in hot, steamy swamps, which are used to explain the constant,
unyielding cloud cover.?? Edgar Rice Burroughs has a Venus which is a tropical world shielded from the heat of the sun by a perpetual cloud cover. C.S. Lewis story about Venus - Perelandra (in the Old Solar language) has the whole surface of Venus covered by an ocean upon which are free-floating islands - natural rafts of vegetation large enough to support animal life, and there is the exception of a single mountainous land-mass. Isaac Asimov's "Oceans of Venus" has a surface totally of water, colonised by human beings using giant underwater domes, where the native species are all aquatic.

Perhaps one of the best examples of this is John Wyndham's "The Man? from Earth", which is set in the far flung future of Venus, where the inhabitants have evolved into intelligent bipeds.? But at the time the narrator arrives in Venus, it is past the age of the dinosaurs, and starting the evolution of primitive mammals.

The man from earth arrived as part of a mining expedition, where rivally between two greedy corporations - Metallic Industries Incorporated and International Chemicals leads to a ship to sent to Venus by one of them to exploit the resources of that planet. This is how Venus appears:

It was not a landscape, for in every direction stretched the sea - a grey, miserable waste. Even our relief could not make the scene anything but dreary. Heavy rain drove across the view in thick rods, slashing at the windows and pitting the troubled water. Lead-grey clouds, heavy with unshed moisture, seemed to press down like great, gorged sponges which would wipe everything clean. Nowhere was there a darkling line to suggestland. The featureless horizon which we saw dimly through the rain was a watery circle

They land on an Island, where there is a hot tropical climate, which is the same worldwide.

Our island was permanently blanketed beneath thick clouds. One never saw the sun at all, but for all that the heat was intense and the rain, which seldom ceased, was warm.

The narrator is a saboteur for one of the companies, and kills off the crew one by one. Unfortunately, the space ship is destroyed as well, and he waits for a rescue that will never come; his company has also betrayed him. But as he explores, he gathers two four legged mammals as pets, and comes across a valley in which there are dinosaur like creatures:

Farther on an enormous head reared above the trees, looking directly at me. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before but thoughts of giant reptiles jumped to my mind. Tyrannosaurus must have had a head not unlike that. I was puzzled as well as scared. Venus could not be still in the age of the giant reptiles. I could not have lived here all this time without seeing something of them before

He discovers that this Valley - called by the later intelligent Venusians "The Valley of Dur" has unique properties -

"at some remote date in the planet's history certain internal gases combined in a way yet imperfectly understood and issued forth through cracks in the crust at this place, and this place only. The mixture had two properties. It not only anaesthetized but it also preserved indefinitely. The result, was to produce a form of suspended animation. Everything that was in the Valley of Dur has remained as it was when the gas first broke out. Everything which has entered the Valley since has remained there imperishably. There is no apparent limit to the length of time that this preservation may continue."

He succumbs to the gas, only waking after millions of years have passed, and the descendants of his four legged pets are the intelligent race on Venus. When he finally manages to communicate, they show him the Earth through a telescope:

Gratz looked back at the scarred pitted surface of the planet. For a long time he gazed in silence. It was like the moon and yet - despite the craters, despite the desolation, there was a familiar suggestion of the linked Americas, stretching from pole to pole - a bulge which might have been the West African coast. Gratz gazed in silence for a great while. At last he turned away. "How Long?" he asked. "Some millions of years."

There's a strong ecological message here - the great mining companies have exploited the earth, and all that is left is a barren planet, now devoid of life. Venus on the other hand, has evolved into a planet of intelligent life, and its climate has also changed to a climate not unlike that of Earth's temperate regions - "occasional clouds, occasional rain, warmth that is not too oppressive."

It's a perfect fit with Laplace's Nebular hypothesis, and the evolution of the planets also is mirrored by evolution on the planets. And it reflects
ideas about the cloud cover of Venus, and the idea that Venus is a planet at a more primitive state than earth.

It isn't until the middle of 1960s that we start to see a more accurate picture of the planet Venus as we know it today with the Mariner probes. And Venus is revealed, not as a watery swamp land, but a runaway greenhouse planet, a hell hole of sulphate clouds, with no water:

Radio observations published in 1958 showed an amazingly hot temperature, upwards of 600?K, around the melting point of lead. "It was very disappointing to many people," one of the discoverers recalled, "who were reluctant to give up the idea of a sister planet and perhaps even the possibility of life." Some astronomers worked up arguments that the radio measurements were misleading, representing something in the upper atmosphere, so that life might still exist on Venus. The matter was settled in 1962 when the spacecraft Mariner II flew past and showed unequivocally that the heat radiation came from the hot surface. (1)

And from Venus, the next exploration is an older world, within Laplace's Nebular hypothesis, that of Mars. My next posting on Astronomy and Science Fiction will look at that.

Despite Isaac's soaking, Keys residents laid back

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac barely stirred Florida Keys residents from their fabled nonchalance Sunday, while the Gulf Coast braced for the possibility that the sprawling storm will strengthen into a dangerous hurricane by the time it makes landfall there.

It was on course to strike land on the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a powerful storm that crippled New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and became a symbol of government ineptitude. Forecasters expected Isaac to pass the Keys late Sunday before turning northwest and striking as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday.

The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for a large swath of the northern Gulf Coast from east of Morgan City, La. ? which includes the New Orleans area ? to Destin, Fla. A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of between 96 and 110 mph (154 to 177 kph).

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency and officials in St. Charles Parish near New Orleans told its 53,000 residents to leave ahead of the storm. Jindal also said he may skip a speaking engagement later this week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa unless the threat to his state subsides. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has canceled his trip to the convention because of Isaac, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott also gave up his speaking engagement.

Elected leaders' vigilance toward tropical storms has heightened in the seven years since Katrina struck. Criticism was leveled at officials reaching all the way to the White House over what was seen as the federal government's slow and bungled response to the storm that killed 1,800.

An emergency declaration was also issued in Mississippi by Gov. Phil Bryant amid concerns of storm surge threatening low-lying areas. Oil companies began evacuating workers from offshore oil rigs and cutting production in advance of Isaac.

The storm was on a course to pass west of Tampa, but it had already disrupted the Republicans' schedule there because of the likelihood of heavy rain and strong winds that extended more than 200 miles from its center.

Even before reaching hurricane strength, Isaac caused considerable inconvenience, with more than 550 flights canceled at Miami International Airport and about 150 from Fort Lauderdale's airport. There were scattered power outages from Key West to Fort Lauderdale affecting more than 16,000 customers, and flooding occurred in low-lying areas.

Gov. Rick Scott said at a news conference Sunday evening that only minor damage was reported from Isaac.

Wind gusts of 60 mph were reported as far north as Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale. But while officials urged residents in southeast Florida to stay home, that recommendation was ignored by surfers and joggers on Miami Beach and shoppers at area malls.

In Key West, Emalyn Mercer rode her bike while decked out with a snorkel and mask, inflatable arm bands and a paddle, just for a laugh. She rode with Kelly Friend, who wore a wet suit, dive cap and lobster gloves.

"We're just going for a drink," Mercer said.

"With the ones that are brave enough like us," Friend added.

Along famed Duval Street, many stores, bars and restaurants closed, the cigar rollers and palm readers packed up, and just a handful of drinking holes remained open.

But people posed for pictures at the Southernmost Point, while at a marina Dave Harris and Robyn Roth took her dachshund for a walk and checked out boats rocking along the waterfront.

"Just a summer day in Key West," Harris said.

That kind of ho-hum attitude extended farther up the coast. Edwin Reeder swung by a gas station in Miami Shores ? not for fuel, but drinks and snacks.

"This isn't a storm," he said. "It's a rain storm."

With a laugh, Reeder said he has not stocked up aside from buying dog and cat food.

The forecast wasn't funny, however. Isaac was expected to draw significant strength from the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but there remained much uncertainty about its path.

The Gulf Coast hasn't been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Dolly, Ike and Gustav all struck the region. Florida, meanwhile, has been hurricane-free since it was struck four times each in 2004 and 2005.

Hurricane center forecasters are uncertain of the storm's path because two of their best computer models now track the storm on opposite sides of a broad cone. One model has Isaac going well west and the other well east. For the moment, the predicted track goes up the middle.

Florida Panhandle residents stocked up on water and gasoline, and at least one Pensacola store ran out of flashlight models and C and D batteries. Scott Reynolds, who lives near the water in Gulf Breeze, filled his car trunk with several cases of water, dozens of power bars and ramen noodles.

"Cigarettes ? I'm stocking up on those too," he said.

Forecasters stressed that the storm's exact location remained extremely uncertain ? a fact not lost on Tony Varnado as he cut sheets of plywood to board up his family's beach home on Pensacola Beach. With the storm's projected path creeping farther to the west, the Mandeville, La., resident joked he might be boarding up the wrong house.

"I'm going to head back that way as soon as we are done here to make sure we are prepared if hits there," he said.

Before reaching Florida, Isaac was blamed for eight deaths in Haiti and two more in the Dominican Republic, and downed trees and power lines in Cuba. It bore down on the Keys two days after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which caused more than $25 billion in damage just north of the island chain.

In Tampa, convention officials said they would convene briefly on Monday, then recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm was expected to have passed. Scott canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.

At Miami International Airport, more than 550 flights Sunday were canceled. Inside the American Airlines terminal, people craned for a look out of one of the doors as a particularly strong band of Isaac began lashing the airport with strong rain and high wind.

Michele Remillard said she was trying to get a seat on a flight to New Orleans, well aware the city could be affected by Isaac later this week. In coastal Plaquemines Parish, La., crews rushed to protect the levees that keep floodwaters from reaching that New Orleans suburb.

"It's a little scary," said Remillard, who was in town for a wedding. "But I need to get home, you know? And if the storm comes my way again, who knows, I might have to come back here."

As of 11 p.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 510 miles (820 kilometers) southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac had top sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) and was moving to the northwest at 15 mph (24 kph).

Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 205 miles (335 km) from the center, meaning storm conditions are possible even in places not in Isaac's direct path.
