The police services have confirmed the arrest of four people suspected of having caused the derailment of a train on Thursday in Fez. Three people are aged between 18 and 23 and are believed to have stolen several stabilizers used to consolidate the rail, the Maghreb Arab Press news agency reported on Friday.? A fourth individual suspected of buying the stolen material was also arrested.

A statement issued by the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) immediately after the incident pointed out that ?the accident may be related to an act of sabotage committed by unknown persons who stole several stabilizers used to consolidate the rail, causing the disintegration of rail track, thus derailment of the train?. The derailment left 46 wounded.

The train departed earlier in the day from Oujda (540 km east of Rabat) and was due to arrive in Fez at around 7 pm. ?The accident took place right at the time when people were getting ready to break their fast in this 13th day of the holy month of Ramadan. Immediately after the incident, the passengers expressed their disgruntlement at the state of the trains in Morocco.
