Philadelphia?s fantastic festival season continues this weekend as the South Street Headhouse District makes its first contribution to the mix with the district?s first spring festival, this Saturday, May 4, noon to 8 p.m.

The South Street Headhouse District Spring Festival will takeover South Street between 2nd and 8th streets, and continue on the 2nd Street Plaza between South and Lombard streets, including the historic Headhouse Shambles.

The free family-friendly festivities span the entire day and give festival-goers the opportunity to check out the numerous local businesses on and just off of South Street, including vendors from Queen Village and Bella Vista.

Of course, fine food and drink will flow liberally, with some of the area?s top establishments dishing festival-appropriate fare. Chef Mitch Prensky of Supper will be turning out his scratch biscuits, laden with fried chicken, pulled pork (the Pigscuit!) or strawberries, whipped cream and powdered sugar. Pizzeria Stella will be serving up an addictive-sounding Mozz en Carrozza, which is a fried and layered grilled cheese. Queen Village?s Ela will be on hand, too, serving Asian barbecue pork sandwiches.

Also, don?t miss the first annual German Maifest celebration at Brauhaus Schmitz on 700 block of South Street and the grand re-opening of Lorenzo and Sons Pizza at 305 South Street.

Read on for our complete guide to the food, drink, entertainment and springtime fun:

? The Food and Drink: The bars and restaurants of South Street, Headhouse Square and Queen Village take service outside for the afternoon, setting up shop along South Street. Neighborhood staples like Bridget Foy?s, Las Bugambilias, S&H Kebab House, Jon?s Bar & Grill and Tattooed Mom are set to participate, as are new favorites like Twisted Tail, the aforementioned Ela and Ralic?s on South.

Keep an eye out for the debut of Hot Diggity?s hot dog cart, which the gourmet hot-dog makers will roll out for the first time on Saturday.

For a festival within a festival, head to Brauhaus Schmitz Maifest. The German beer hall and pop-up beer garden promises a 20-foot Maipole, tons of flowers and exclusive spring imports like maibocks. The VIP tickets include a buffet, exclusive bathroom access and more.

? The Live Music and Entertainment: With nearly a dozen spots to catch live entertainment within the fest, South Street will be filled with tunes and cheers all day. At 5th and South, the festival stage will feature a full day of music showcasing popular local acts like the Philadelphia Blues Messengers, Sweet Leda and John & Brittany. Three top bands ? Stolen Rhodes, The Strange Heat and The Great SOCIO ? round out the bill. See the complete lineup below and here.

In addition to the main stage, five satellite music stages in every block of South Street will rock all day, too. Additional musical performances and entertainment will take place at the Kids Zone stage in the 200 block of South, as well as at participating restaurants and bars.

Look for the Heroes Zone on the 600 block, dedicated to those who serve. The Police Department and Fire Department will also be on hand to showcase bicycle safety, fire prevention and apparatus demonstrations.

Also, head to the historic Shambles to check out a bicycle stunt performances and a bike display.

? The Vendors: Beyond the food, there will be more than 40 artists, crafters and local boutiques and businesses to supply retail therapy. In the 300 block of South look for a health and beauty zone and on the 500 block, check out Artisan Avenue.

Those looking to shop local should seek out goods and wares from Atomic City Comics, Bus Stop Boutique, Moon & Arrow, Busybee Homestore, Paper Moon and Philly AIDS Thrift.

? The Kids Zone: The family area on the 200 block of South Street will be chock-full of stuff to do with kids of all ages. The Expressive Hand and Fleisher Art Memorial will on onsite to coordinate hands-on art and craft projects. The School of Rock House Band and the Tune Up Philly youth orchestra will be on hand to entertain the crowd. Additional family activities are planned for the day at Starr Garden Park at 6th and Lombard.

Finally, no festival would be complete without face painting; find it on South and 2nd courtesy of Freckles Face Painting.

? Getting There: The best way to arrive is by foot or via public transportation. With street closures, traffic may be heavy.

For those who are driving, discounted parking rates will be available for the day at the IMPARK lot located at 634 South Columbus Boulevard, just a block walk away from the festival at the end of the South Street pedestrian foot bridge.
