In the midst of environmental conservationism, we sometimes forget the dangers they bring, especially those overgrown ones. That is why we need to prune or remove them sometimes.

How dangerous are overgrown trees are to the public? Some people maintain their trees the right way to prevent them from becoming dangerous property. Communities look to preserve trees especially if they happen to be over a hundred years old. However, there are some trees that are dangerous when they overgrow. They overgrow because no one did maintain them, so in the event of a very strong wind (or hurricane perhaps), they fall or get uprooted and in many cases, end up harming people or property.

Few people realise how dangerous an overgrown tree can be to the community. If it collapses on people or on any nearby property, for instance, the event will cause great damage and people will start filing charges for the harm and damage done. Just imagine you are jogging one morning and a huge tree falls on you. You would get hurt, right? What if you happen to rest or park your car under it? What would it be if one of your little children gets struck by it on their way to school? Who would be held reliable?

It is quite confusing to point out who could be held responsible as owners would shrug off any form of responsibility, claiming it is not their fault the tree fell or would say people won't get hurt if they don't come near the tree. If we come to the local council's side, they would state it is not their responsibility to look after private trees and that they cannot use public funds to trim or remove trees in private spaces.

With regards to trees in public spaces, they also present the same hazards as with those in private lands. If they fall on public highways, it could cause heavy traffic and create significant accident upon any unlucky passers-by or vehicle. Sometimes they get in the way of public infrastructure projects. In one city in the Philippines, some residents opposed the national public works department's plan to cut down the century-old trees along the national road as part of their national road widening project.

Think about it. Conservation and sentimentality over public safety.

It is not about being anti-trees and anti-environmental conservation. If we care much about the trees, we could choose to earth-balled and transplant them in a safe location where they would be left undisturbed. We have to admit many tree owners have been responsible with their trees, many of which have overgrown, and many of them tend to be hazardous in some locations where people frequent like public roads. Due to owners' negligence, the public is left to suffer.
